Do you wonder what it means to live a full life? Do you experience times when you are not sure of the direction of your life? Do we have incredible potential as human beings that we are not accessing? These questions may be worth exploring if you are experiencing anxiety, depression, or other symptoms. The state of our life at all levels is rarely explored in therapy. Often therapy targets part of the problem but not all of the problems.

With a culturally responsive and trauma-focused lens, I take an integrative approach to therapy by drawing on psychodynamic and humanistic frameworks that've been proven effective.
Starting therapy can feel like embarking on a journey into uncharted territory. It's confronting overwhelming challenges like the persistent weight of anxiety, the pervasive cloud of depression, the tension of stress, or the intricate interplay of life’s multifaceted issues that often drives us to seek therapeutic support. Making the decision to start therapy marks a pivotal moment in the pursuit of self-discovery and healing. Entering therapy is a testament to resilience. It's about bravely confronting internal struggles with the hope of finding relief, understanding, and ultimately, positive change.

My approach to therapy is modern and humanistic.
Welcoming new clients! Have you been experiencing unwanted emotions and behaviours? Are you feeling exhausted? Disconnected? Overwhelmed? Is there stress at home or school? Maybe what once helped you get through is no longer working the way you want. Perhaps you want to dig a little deeper and get curious about yourself. Therapy doesn't always have to feel or be painful.

Motherhood is so often glamorized as the most beautiful, selfless, magical phase of life and although this can sometimes feel true, often the demands of being a new parent are far from it. The impact of prolonged sleep deprivation and prioritizing our baby's needs while dismissing our own can keep us stuck in the fight-flight response. When this goes unchecked, you may notice feelings of anxiety and depression, along with bursts of rage followed by shame and guilt. I support clients by helping them find ways to come out of the constant fight or flight response and to begin parenting from a place that is more integrated and grounded.

Experiencing trauma does not have to hold you back. I specialize in supporting those who are navigating how past childhood, relational, betrayal, intergenerational, or complex trauma may have impacted their relationship with themselves, their body, and with others. This may present itself as struggling with self-esteem, body image, emotional/binge eating, attachment, relationship struggles, people pleasing, anxiety, perfectionism, or with just feeling “enough”. Together, we can process past trauma, nurture our unique nervous systems, break patterns that keep us feeling stuck, and move towards a life of self-trust and embodiment.

We can all benefit from taking the time to reflect on our lives in the presence of a neutral therapist. When people encounter a crisis or a challenging situation, it can provide an opportunity for the development of the self. Change is possible. Therapy can provide an avenue to identify and interrupt old ways of thinking, feeling and behaving that are keeping one stuck. It provides an opportunity to reflect on one's life vs. automatically responding. In this process, a person is able to see things in a new light and identify different options for dealing with old problems.

Life can sometimes be tricky to navigate. One day you're feeling great, and the next everything comes crashing down. Seeing a therapist during stressful times provides support, a fresh perspective, and someone to listen when you need to voice your struggles. Also, you don't have to wait until things are bad to see someone! Talking to someone (like me) and getting on solid ground when things are going okay in your life can really help to keep you level for when life throws you a curveball. I offer therapy for a number of different situations, from personal growth, anxiety, depression or grief, to LGBTQ+ specific challenges.

Humanistic Counsellors

How does humanistic therapy work?

One tenet of humanistic therapy is that people are good. The humanistic approach is concerned with a person’s ability to accept oneself. It likewise encourages a person to overcome self-criticism and self-defeating tendencies, as well as disapproval from others. This approach also emphasizes self-actualisation and treating an individual as a whole person. A foundation of this therapy type: The patient is the expert in their life, and treatment often takes the individual’s lead.

Is humanistic therapy evidence-based?

Humanistic therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has found that humanistic therapy can lead to significant improvement, and for some people it can be just as effective as other therapies, such as Cognitive behavioural therapy. The benefits of humanistic therapy are enduring.

How long does humanistic therapy last?

The goal of humanistic therapy is to understand a person’s day-to-day experiences. While sessions can be short-term and last over a few months, therapy can sometimes continue beyond that and last up to a year or more. And because patients learn the theory behind humanistic therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is humanistic therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with humanistic therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in addressing poor self-esteem and self-sabotage, as well as improving conditions including anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can be long standing, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve learned during treatment.
