As a humanistic therapist, I believe that all people are inherently good and deserving of respect. There is so much stigma and shame in our culture around the very characteristics that make us uniquely human. I'm passionate about helping adults on their journey toward healing after trauma and exploring the intricacies of their identities. With a background in psychology and counseling, I am dedicated to creating a safe and empathic space for self-exploration, growth, and liberation. We could be a good fit to work together if you are looking to connect with your inner wisdom to live an authentic life that aligns with your values.

My therapeutic orientation is existential-humanistic but I do employ other methods like SFT, CBT, OEI, and EMDR (details about what these are on my website) when my client needs something different.
Do you feel distressed but don't understand why? Have you tried different methods and it only helped a little but never get ahead? Have you ever wondered what the core issue is? Working with me might find you those answers. A lot of people ask who gets counselling, I believe that anyone who experiences stress could get a therapist; however, many have amazing family and friends that allow them to bounce ideas, inspire motivation, and provides insight so counselling really isn't needed. Most people wait till they are in crisis to get help which would mean a rough journey to baseline. Let's be preventative rather than reactionary.

I bring a humanistic and trauma-informed lens to my understanding of life, meaning that I see you as an expert of your lived experience and I am attuned to how experiences that overwhelm your internal resources can impact you.
In our journey of life, we may encounter experiences, emotions, and patterns that make it challenging for us to feel a sense of fulfillment in life. Participating in counselling can help you navigate and process these challenges, either from the past or present moment, constructively and build a more meaningful and satisfying life with new coping strategies and skills, insight and self-awareness, and changes in behaviours/environment through in-depth exploration of self. We are all work in progress, and although it can be daunting to begin this process, it can help you find that inner spark to change how you feel about your life.

You've felt the weight of expectations to conform to other’s standards of who you “should” be for as long as you can remember. It might feel extra draining as the pressure comes from multiple sources- perhaps from family, friends, religion, school, or society. You’re fed up with spinning in the same circles and experiencing the same internal conflict; parts of you are done with feeling unseen and misunderstood, while other parts of you have concerns about being a burden or have fears about being perceived. Together, let's create a space where you don't need anyone's approval or to be anything other than exactly who you are.

Just as a seed will grow into a plant, and a plant will seek water and grow towards light, there is an intrinsic capacity within all living organisms to heal and to grow, and a natural inclination to move in this direction. My practice is guided by trust in the wisdom of this inner healing intelligence. I am a holistic practitioner working in the realms of transpersonal psychotherapy and birth care, with a focus on human attachment, lifespan development, and spiritual care "from womb to tomb." Birth psychology and work with holotropic states of consciousness are areas of special interest.

With so many stressors in the world, it is easy to feel alone and uncertain of who you are or want to be. Therapy provides a space for discovery and connection. Discovery of how certain ways of understanding our place in the world emerged, and of how small shifts can help connect us with our authentic self, desires and values. My job is to help create a safe space where it is possible for you to be yourself in the fullest sense – even if you don’t quite know who that is yet. So, come to therapy as you are. Anxious. Excited. Messy. Sad. Confused. Tired. Changing. There is nothing you can’t be and can’t feel in our sessions together.

Finding the right therapist can be a daunting task. As a Black and queer counsellor, I work to help those who are in need of a safe space to open up about difficult issues that they have faced in their life. I work from a trauma-informed and anti-oppressive lens in order to create a safe environment for every client I work with. I especially enjoy working with LGBTQIA2S+ folks, BIPOC folks, and sex workers, and I welcome anyone outside of these communities to reach out as well.

Humanistic Counsellors

How does humanistic therapy work?

One tenet of humanistic therapy is that people are good. The humanistic approach is concerned with a person’s ability to accept oneself. It likewise encourages a person to overcome self-criticism and self-defeating tendencies, as well as disapproval from others. This approach also emphasizes self-actualisation and treating an individual as a whole person. A foundation of this therapy type: The patient is the expert in their life, and treatment often takes the individual’s lead.

Is humanistic therapy evidence-based?

Humanistic therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has found that humanistic therapy can lead to significant improvement, and for some people it can be just as effective as other therapies, such as Cognitive behavioural therapy. The benefits of humanistic therapy are enduring.

How long does humanistic therapy last?

The goal of humanistic therapy is to understand a person’s day-to-day experiences. While sessions can be short-term and last over a few months, therapy can sometimes continue beyond that and last up to a year or more. And because patients learn the theory behind humanistic therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is humanistic therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with humanistic therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in addressing poor self-esteem and self-sabotage, as well as improving conditions including anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can be long standing, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve learned during treatment.
