Are you finding it difficult to cope with your own or a loved one’s cancer diagnosis? Although everyone’s experience of cancer is unique, several themes stand out when I reflect on the concerns clients commonly share with me: Many people are having difficulty living with the unknowns. Others share about sadness or a sense of loss of control. Almost all clients talk about the challenge of dealing with fear or worry about the future. If any of these kinds of experiences resonate with you, I invite you to reach out to me. Our work together cannot take away the diagnosis, but I can help you feel better able to cope with the experience.

Life isn't always easy and it doesn't always give us what we expect. We can find ourselves consumed with worry and spiraling thoughts or feeling so low and unmotivated, even getting out of bed seems tough. We can reel from the mental load and exhaustion that comes with chronic pain or chronic illness and feel overwhelmed or burdened with grief and loss or life transitions. We can be hard on ourselves and sometimes struggle to meet our goals. Things might feel hopeless - like they'll never get better. But you don't have to travel these roads alone.

I work with children, teens, adults and couples facing life transitions, coping problems or mental health concerns. Depression and anxiety is very common, but I also work with loss, health concerns and family problems.Therapy is about change, but it is not about changing who we are. The person we are meant to be has been here all along. Sometimes we need help to reconnect. I work with my clients to explore patterns of behavior and thought that can keep us in small and narrow places, and to reconnect to our wiser, balanced and more joyful self.

Supporting others begins with the presence of a safe space of openness and acceptance that facilitates a client’s innate yearning for healing, growth, and self actualization. My own journey has led me to the joy, mystery, and wonder of self discovery, the healing experience of healthy relationships, and finding meaning and purpose in life. The enjoyment in my work as a therapist comes from guiding clients on their journey to discover what brings them joy and to help them reconnect to their inner resources – their strengths, wholeness, peace, deeper nature, and internal guidance and wisdom.

I use a developmental-attachment lens to understand a person of any age in the context of their self development and the important people in their life. Whether it's a child, youth or adult, I know that we all struggle between the expectations of others and connecting into our own desire for balance within our self-- emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually. Connecting back into our self is the first step in being able to express our feelings and needs more clearly and cultivating positive relationships with those we love.

Our mental health is such an important part of our overall wellbeing and for the way we show up in our life, yet it isn’t always an easy thing to address or to talk about. Our experiences and the challenges that can come with them are unique to each of us, just as are our strengths and values, and sometimes having the support of a therapist can help us to reconnect with these parts of ourselves and choose a way forward. I acknowledge that cultural and social systems interact with our inner world and lived experience, and it’s important to me that my practice integrates diverse perspectives and ways of caring for each client.

I believe people experience psychological/emotional suffering because they are not able to relate deeply enough to certain aspects of themselves. This disconnection causes "symptoms" and pain. Depression and anxiety are the most common, but they can further develop into problems with identity, addictions, anger, suicidal feelings, despair, problems in relationships, personality disorders etc. To relieve suffering and to further ones personal development, a deeper connection with self is needed. The clients I usually work with are people who feel thwarted in their attempts to be happy, have satisfying relationships, achieve success.

If therapy, to you, means digging in deep and healing all parts of you - we may be a good fit! As a therapist, I believe that struggles and challenges are all a part of life. This is what makes us human! But we were never meant to struggle alone. You may be looking to address and process past wounds that are still impacting you today. Or, you may be searching for ways to deal with the messiness of life and learn to thrive rather than just survive. Maybe you're hoping to grow and evolve, by gaining skills your future self will thank you for. Either way, I will meet you where you're at and work with you towards healing.

Grief Counsellors
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
