Hi, I'm Sylvia and I'm so glad you're here! I believe at some point or another, we’ve all experienced something that has changed our life. That’s why it’s important within my practice to develop a space where you feel safe and supported. I want to create a strong therapeutic alliance, one where you have a voice and a place to be your true, authentic self. Everyone has the capacity to be resilient and I want our sessions to foster this inner strength. Our time together is ultimately your time.

Sometimes finding a solution requires us to change the way we think about a problem instead of attempting to change the behaviors that caused it. I take a collaborative approach to therapy, by empowering clients to rely on their own resilience and strength to explore solutions.  I specialize in working with adolescents, families, and adults with concerns involving complex mental health, trauma, grief and loss, and behavioral and mood disorders that can cause high risk or impulsive actions. A positive therapeutic relationship is essential to the therapy process. You need to feel safe, supported, and comfortable during therapy.

I recognize that it may be difficult to speak to someone about your concerns - know that my job is to listen and help but never to judge. I work with teens and adults, to support all of life's challenges ranging from behavioural concerns, low self esteem, lack of confidence, suicidal ideation, self harm, anxiety, depression and life adjustment. I use behavioural coaching, CBT, IFS, EFT and narrative therapy to support my clients. This means that I will adapt my approach to fit what YOU need, as therapy is not one-size-fits-all. In sessions with me, you can expect genuineness, humor, compassion and openness as we work together.

You're a high-achieving professional or mom who's getting bogged down by your tendency to over-think things. You realize your thoughts are irrational, but can’t get them out of your head. I help moms who are overwhelmed, numb, disconnected, struggling to juggle everything (aka supermom syndrome), or more irritable with others. You feel afraid, guilty, alone, and no longer recognize yourself. You may be having scary thoughts about your baby and are afraid to tell anyone. Others have no clue you're struggling in this way and you're just trying to keep it together.

I'm Dr. Lisa Pascal and I'm a child psychologist who specializes in the treatment of moderate to severe mental health challenges including OCD, anxiety disorders, and challenging behaviours. Having suffered from anxiety, perfectionism, and obsessive compulsive behaviours myself, I understand the toll mental health challenges can take. Luckily I came across acceptance and commitment therapy and my whole life changed! Now I'm super passionate about helping children and teens live a meaningful life using these techniques. Although my passion is working with youth, I believe parents play a large role in the treatment process too.

My passion is helping women reconnect with their bodies and sense of vitality following sexual trauma, boundary violations, medical trauma, and childbirth trauma. When our boundaries have been breached, whether sexually, medically, relationally, or in any other way, we can lose connection with ourselves. We may lose the ability to feel our bodies and remain present in our own lives. We may disconnect from intimacy and loved ones, or live in fear of the medical system. My intention is to support the healing journey after trauma and boundary violations, and support reconnection with safety, presence, and joy again.

In life we are often faced with different challenges that we need to navigate through. Sometimes we need a safe place to breath, re-group, and give ourselves permission to look at where we have come, where we are now and where we want to head using the wisdom our past has taught us. Sometimes we find ourselves cycling around the same life problems and we know it is time to change how we are stepping into those relationships either with ourselves or others. Whether you are experiencing difficulty with transitions in life, grief, relationship challenges, mental health concerns, or addiction, I want to help you.

I have had the honor to work in the helping field for more than 12 years. My experience has taught me that whatever someone's concern is for wanting to talk to someone, we are all needing the same thing - relief from emotional pain. Sometimes in that pain we feel hopeless or overwhelmed. Feeling as though we are in a cycle of the same feelings or behaviors that may not be working anymore for us; and that has now created negative consequences in our lives. Whether it is the first time or trying again - knowing that something has to change and needing support is a great place to start to take those steps.

***EVENINGS AND WEEKENDS AVAILABLE *** I work with individuals who are struggling with a wide range of concerns. Many find it challenging to identify and regulate their emotions. They often act impulsively and struggle to maintain consistency in their day-to-day life. Many of the individuals I work with find interpersonal relationships challenging and may even vacillate between pushing people away and clinging to people. It is not uncommon for clients to currently be or to have previously engaged in self-harm and/or suicide ideation.

One of the most common challenges in developing a relationship is finding a way to become closer to your partner without sacrificing your own individuality. It’s worth noting that 69% of all arguments in a relationship stem from differences between the two individuals involved, such as conflicting desires, needs, upbringings, values, priorities, and perspectives. There are always three perspectives in a relationship: yours, your partner’s and the one when both perspectives can sit side by side. Common sources of relationship stress include lack of communication, unmet expectations, difficulty resolving issues, and lack of intimacy.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counselling

How can I find a therapist in Calgary?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postal code, or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postal code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
