The pain associated with grief is a natural yet deeply unsettling part of our human journey. My career in the helping profession started as a personal care provider for seniors. The experience brought me closer to families and grief. I have witnessed and experienced firsthand the depth of emotions that arise when we confront loss – whether it is the fading of a relationship, the shift in identity, the disruption of routine or the loss of a dear one. While the journey of loss is one we all share, the grieving process is as individual as each person I have cared for.
Grief rarely follows a straight path; instead, it ebbs and flows like the tides; sometimes, it is not so overwhelming, but then it washes over you, leaving you feeling despair, lonely, shocked, hopeless, or guilty. In my role, I have come to understand that grief can be all-consuming. As the tide comes in, it has the power to draw us away from the present.
