Not accepting new clients
I work with adults who believe that they are stuck in old patterns - often patterns learned in early childhood. These unhealthy or unsafe patterns from the past often lead to depression and anxiety in the present. In a safe and caring environment, we will work to help you change those aspects of yourself that are getting in the way of your having a more fulfilling life. Characteristics that may have served you well in the past may no longer work. I am not accepting new clients but if I have worked with you before you can contact me.

At the core of my work with clients we seek to explore your unique responses to three fundamental questions; What direction do I want/need to shift my life towards? What actions can I start taking to make this a reality? What may be getting in the way of achieving this? Individual therapy provides a space for us to slow down and make space to deepen our connection with these questions and evaluate what change is required. This is done by thoroughly unpacking and organizing the jumble of thoughts, emotions, sensations, and narratives that can distract or get in the way and then learning how to take actions that reflect our values.

I approach therapy with curiosity, a collaborative mindset, and respect for the knowledge that you hold about yourself and your life. I work with people facing challenges associated with life transitions, grief, neurodivergence, and mental health and wellbeing. I meet with clients of all ages, and I particularly specialize in working with youth. In addition to my work as a therapist, I am pursuing a PhD in social work where my research focuses on how youth mental health and the climate crisis intersect. I support young people experiencing eco-anxiety, depression, fear about the future, and concern for the environment.

I am a psychotherapist with more than 20 years of experience. Therapy with me is a process of deepening your understanding of yourself through a series of conversations that will help you identify the root of your problems and their effect on your life. Understanding the root of your problems will help you make changes in your life. Some of our conversations may be about things you 'know' about while at other times, you will be surprised. Together we will explore and make sense of how your life has unfolded and look at what works and doesn't work about your life.

Having the right therapist to talk to and collaborate with on your goals, challenges, and emotional turmoil can help put things into perspective and create a plan for success. It can be challenging to navigate the world in the face of oppression, disability, stigma, and other barriers to success. My therapy draws on inner strengths and creative expression to manage complex thoughts and emotions, and increase feelings of empowerment. I emphasize meaning-making, the importance of self-efficacy, and perceived control of experiences in the healing process from cognitive, somatic, and social-constructivist perspectives.

I had been a medical doctor before I became a psychologist. I changed professions because I realized that our thoughts, feelings, and behavioural habits have a powerful effect on our health and happiness but their potential to aid healing is often neglected in medicine. I feel privileged to work with clients who are on the journey of recovery and self-growth during and after adversities. I work with clients who have sleep problems, fatigue, stress, low mood, depression, anxiety, panic, chronic worry, obsessive thinking, post-concussion syndrome, medical illnesses, or chronic pain.

It's no secret life can be hard. Sometimes we struggle alone feeling like things will never get better. As an experienced therapist, my job is to work with you to develop a psychotherapy relationship that is safe, meaningful, and authentic. As this occurs, we explore and work through the life issues that led you here, and possibly some additional ones. Psychodynamic therapy is not typically brief or short-term. If you are interested in working on deeper issues to promote lasting psychological growth and healing, please get in touch with me. Alternatively, I also offer relatively shorter or open-ended psychotherapy.

I support people in exploring what it means to live authentically to themselves. We can explore topics of anxiety, depression, trauma, self-esteem, neurodiversity, family/relationship issues, sexuality, and gender. In the past, I have had the honour of working as a sex, kink and BDSM educator, teaching workshops with a focus on communication, harm-reduction, and pleasure. Other topics of interest have included radical body acceptance, navigating non-monogamy, and dating. My work is rooted in anti-oppressive, trauma-informed, intersectional feminist values. I am a queer person and second-generation settler with Lebanese ancestry.

As a philosophical therapist, I offer a supportive environment in which to explore your thoughts and emotions, as well as stimulating dialogue in which you will strengthen your ability to face challenges by using creative and deeply reflective thinking. The idea is to think big and come at problems from a fresh and sometimes surprising perspective. I also help problem-solve at the level of habits, when it's time to put our philosophical reflections into practice and make desired changes at the level of daily living. The goal is to discover a greater sense of possibility and to use that to live with greater clarity and authenticity.

You are important! I often hear my clients sharing their feelings of not being heard by their loved ones or not knowing where to start in their healing journey. I use self-compassion and your strengths as a starting point to build coping strategies. My goal is to always give you a space to be heard and someone on your team so you know you are not alone. I find the warmth of emotion-focused therapy and integrative approach of psychodynamic therapy combine to create a kind and deep understanding of my clients during their process. Your needs and boundaries are important, together we can work on building confidence and self-advocacy.

Do you feel like things could be better? Like this isn't who you really are? If so, you're not alone. All too often, who we are is buried underneath the patterns, habits, and ways of being in the world that we’ve had to adopt in order to carry on. We all adopt strategies that keep us safe and protected, that help us carry on. They're often needed. And they come at a cost. We lose touch with ourselves; with our passion and our joy and our curiosity. We become disconnected, from ourself and others. But it doesn't have to be that way.

It takes courage to consider therapy. You may be pondering about the "what ifs" or infinite questions regarding therapy and your journey. You might be asking yourself, "will it be worth it?", "will she understand me and my goals?", "do I need therapy if I am not in a crisis?" or other thoughts that might increase the feeling of uncertainty. By becoming familiar with me and the services that I provide, we can subside the uncertainty.

Many people hold the belief that challenges with emotional and mental well-being are a result of difficulty in coping, functioning, or adaptability. We may attempt to use willpower, intellect, and behavioural changes to tackle these issues; if these attempts fail to bring us inner peace or lasting change, we can begin to feel ashamed, alone, and stagnant. It is my belief that challenges with mental health, emotion, and relationships do not exist in a vacuum. These are more than personal failings at coping and functioning. Once we settle into this understanding, we can begin to uncover the deeper questions of your healing work.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counselling

How can I find a therapist in Toronto?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postal code, or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postal code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
