With 20 years in the field and a columnist with Metroland News and Newmarket Today, I work with children, adults, couples and families, supporting their mental health. Difficult experiences both past and present can anchor us, keeping us trapped in a space of anxiety, depression, anger and hurt. These emotions can be exhausting and overwhelming. As a therapist, I envision my role as the support to guide you toward making a shift in healing. We do not need to stay in our past, in our traumas and in our pain. We can move forward and thrive; we deserve to do so.

I believe in the power of relationships. As a therapist at Noun Therapy, my purpose is to help couples and individuals recognize patterns, dynamics, interactions and values that shape their relationships. My approach involves providing space for clients to share their experiences, express their emotions and explain their reactions. At the same time, I pick up on cues that lead to greater awareness in each individual and couple.

We live in a traumatized world with many factors impacting our mental health and well-being negatively. Everything from war, conflicts, racial violence, displacement, loss, grief, family and relationship issues, life transitions, all test our strength and ability to cope with the demands of everyday life. We all need support, human connection, kindness and compassion to get through these difficult times. It can be difficult to reach out for help and embark on an unknown path to a healing journey. It takes courage and commitment to engage in therapy but it can also be extremely rewarding when you get the appropriate support.

We often believe we must suffer on our own, having learned to be fiercely independent. Our suffering can show up as lack of motivation, burn-out, isolation, unhelpful habits, abuse, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, feeling stuck, or feeling like we just need to survive the day to day. We may even believe that we are meant to suffer. Perhaps we might believe that we cannot reach our potential or reach out for help, or we have forgotten who we are. When we receive the support that we need, we can all reach our full potential, regardless of what happened to us.

Our environment and connections affect greatly our ability to cope, our wellbeing, mental health, and joy. Whether it's breaking the cycle of negative thoughts, feeling like there is no one to turn to, struggling to identify feelings, or just needing someone to talk to when life is feeling like too much, strengthening our resolve is always beneficial. Together we can deconstruct the negative stories you may tell yourself and rebuild them into kinder, stronger, and more positive stories that help you be authentic and feel connected in mind, body and environment.

You’re dealing with a lot; feeling guilty and confused. Guilty for not loving more or trying harder. They’re telling you these things - it must be true, right? They were charismatic and charming, showering you with PDA and compliments, but it all changed. You’re embarrassing they say, and now you feel trapped and broken. You’re not alone. It's not your fault. You Google “abusive relationships” and read about narcissistic abuse. That’s your life! You need guidance. I know this because I needed it too. I chased “good enough” trying to “behave well” for my family. After college, I married and divorced a narcissist who always blamed me.

I'm glad you stumbled upon my profile! Welcome. As a parent with an active toddler and a full time job, I can respect and appreciate directness and efficiency. For this reason, I am a huge believer that most of us can make changes within a short period of time. My approach tends to be direct with a touch of humour.

Feminist Counsellors
How does feminist therapy work?
Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.
What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?
Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.
How long does feminist therapy last?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.
Does feminist therapy work?
As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
