I believe in the human being and his or her capacity to re-build. I find that there is nothing more important than a willingness to develop compassion for oneself and one's situation. For me, the therapy is a place to reconnect with emotions, and begin a very important journey within the supportive therapeutic relationship.

Your relationships can be an incredible source of pleasure and connection, AND they can be the biggest source of tension and exhaustion. You might feel rigid and uncreative, or be falling into people-pleasing habits. You may feel overwhelming physical sensations of constriction, pain or numbness. You play a vast range of roles in your friendships, romantic & intimate dynamics, and at work. This can be a lot to handle, and you may be masking your authentic self. Creative arts therapy can offer new ways to find playfulness so you can relax into intimacy in your relationships, your body, and fully own the stories that shape you.

I find it rewarding to accompany people who struggle because they feel different, who have difficulties understanding certain aspects of their identity, or who are going through important life transitions. Maybe you want to revisit a stubborn impression that something is wrong with you. You may have experienced losses and have a hard time finding your footing again. You may be tired of trying to fit into a world that doesn’t really seem designed for you. And, when you pay more attention to your needs, you may encounter guilt, shame, or a realization that you are not sure what your needs are anymore.

I am a psychologist with a passion for people and a deep and abiding respect for the courage that makes us whole. I believe we are our own map makers and possess what we require in order to navigate our unique course. Sometimes the journey is a solitary one, at other times it is shared. Therapy, as a collaborative engagement, is a place and a space to connect with one’s own knowing. You are your own best expert ... and beginner.

In my practice, I work with clients who are grappling with a range of issues, from navigating their gender or sexual orientation in a world that often lacks understanding and acceptance, to managing the unique challenges that come with being/suspecting being neurodiverse. Many of my clients struggle with internalized shame and societal stigma, and my goal is to reduce these barriers by fostering a sense of validation and support. Additionally, I specialize in working with individuals who struggle with codependency and relational wounds, helping them navigate healthier relationship dynamics.

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
