Art is healing. Sometimes words cannot express the depth of our experiences and I am here to support you in a creative and healing process called Art Therapy. Art making in sessions can provide deeper insight into your life, allowing you to take an active role in your healing process, and the feeling of being seen and heard. No art experience is needed. We are making meaning, not masterpieces and it can also be fun! I am a compassionate RP (Qualifying) DTATI Candidate with over 20 years experience as an Educator. As a black/biracial woman I know the importance of feeling welcome. I provide a culturally humble and safe space for all.

Do you struggle with chronic pain that affects your day-to-day functioning, relationships, and ability to focus at work or home? Do you feel exhausted or frustrated by constantly feeling pain? Do you wonder what life could be like pain-free or be able to manage your pain? More than ever people are experiencing chronic pain which results in time lost at work and an opioid crisis. You've probably tried physiotherapy, acupuncture, or massage therapy but nothing is working long-term for you. I believe that pain can be managed differently. Let's try a different approach together.

It seems like no one truly understands how challenging it is to walk the line between two cultures. On one side, there's your family's unique dynamics, expectations, and responsibilities. On the other, the Western norms for work, dating, parenting, and living. The combination creates a tremendous amount of stress, leaving you feeling down, anxious, depressed, and full of guilt. You know you need help setting healthy boundaries, and focusing on self-care, but you need someone who understands the challenges associated with adopting a new culture and society while staying connected and grounded with your own cultural values.

Clarity is my hope for each person I see, whether we use Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy, Narrative approaches, EMDR, Mindfulness, yoga, polyvagal theory, or creative arts expression. Regardless if your struggle is with depression, anxiety, an eating disorder, or trauma, clarity means a better awareness and understanding of yourself in the current situation. Knowing yourself allows you to make choices best for you, consciously. It can be challenging to unravel and understand all of the often conflicting messages we hear and give ourselves, but it is crucial. This is the work I will support and guide you in.

In my role as a mental health counsellor, some of the issues for which individuals seek help include depression, anxiety, self-esteem, grief and bereavement, chronic pain, stress management, and life transitions. I also have an very special interest in supporting individuals entering the menopause transition, from peri- to post-menopause. Helping individuals along this transition is very important as many health care providers are unable to spend the time with you to fully educate you on this transition - I have done the deep dive with this issue and I can help fill in the gaps and empower you to advocate for your health.

Life sometimes seems full of loss: a diagnosis of Alzheimer's or cancer, divorce, relationship breakdown, job loss, or even the death of a loved one or a beloved pet. Loss can look like strong emotions, intrusive thoughts or uncomfortable physical sensations in our bodies. In order to numb our pain, we often rely on distractions (scrolling, food, shopping..) to get through the day. What you're feeling is perfectly normal, but we were never meant to grieve alone! Together, we can learn to live with loss and perhaps even carry it differently. To walk a little lighter. To thrive, find meaning and hope again despite the pain of loss.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
