Our struggles with life and mental health often make us forget how to offer compassion and kindness to ourselves. While we "demonize" our body's response to seemingly easy "routine" functions, therapy can help us understand & recognize how our experiences have shaped our survival strategies and ways of being. My practice is grounded in my work in community-based mental health programs, as well as lived experience of systemic issues. I draw on EMDR, internal family systems, somatic and anti-oppressive approaches, based on the individual/couple's needs. I have specialized training in working with trauma, abuse and relationships.

You are Tired of feeling stuck. You want life to look and feel different but nothing you have tried has helped. You know there must be another way. You Snap more easily with your partner, your children, your loved ones and the Guilt shows up. You Know you can do better, but just feel lost and overwhelmed. You're tired of feeling not good enough when you are putting in 120% Every Day. You're a parent trying to juggle all the balls and you feel alone. The lack of sleep is taking it's toll and you're Googling "gentle" sleep consultants hoping more sleep will make a difference, but can't imagine leaving your baby to Cry It Out.

You've been thinking about seeing a therapist for a while now, perhaps months or even years. Maybe you thought you were managing well, but then COVID happened. Let's face it, life can feel chaotic and messy at times. This may lead us to feeling overwhelmed, confused and lacking a sense of direction. We may feel burdened with anxiety, worry, fear or anger regarding the wellbeing of ourselves or relationships that we care about. In an effort to be helpful, family or friends may try to give advice, but that may leave us feeling even worse. This can make reaching out for support all the harder.

You search for therapists but don’t know if you will go through the session because you’re afraid of what you might discover? Sometimes you may not even know why you feel the way you do. As a full time working mother, I get how hard it is to always be stressed, to feel frustrated, and overwhelmed. It’s hard prioritizing mental health when you are already burdened with so many responsibilities whether finances, home, kids, school, or work. Except, when you finally do put yourself first you realize how liberating it is...to be in control of your emotions, to have the coping mechanisms to help you through the difficult days...

It seems like no one truly understands how challenging it is to walk the line between two cultures. On one side, there's your family's unique dynamics, expectations, and responsibilities. On the other, the Western norms for work, dating, parenting, and living. The combination creates a tremendous amount of stress, leaving you feeling down, anxious, depressed, and full of guilt. You know you need help setting healthy boundaries, and focusing on self-care, but you need someone who understands the challenges associated with adopting a new culture and society while staying connected and grounded with your own cultural values.

I am passionate about seeing individuals, couples, and families thrive where they are. Being stuck in inefficient ways of thinking can trap us. Inefficient thinking patterns can make us feel anxious, depressed, frustrated, or at a loss for how to feel better. It can impact our relationships. I approach each client through a comprehensive biological, psychological, social, and spiritual approach. Using scientific based theories I foster a non-judgemental and safe space for each client. My client-centred culturally competent approach can help foster relief and lead towards resolution.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
