I work primarily from a Hakomi (somatic) and Motivational Interviewing approach.
Life experiences can hinder our emotional, mental, or spiritual growth, making it difficult to move forward in an effective way. My experience has been working with teens, men, and women and their issues with trauma, addictions, OCD, eating disorders, and anxiety. I am passionate about helping my clients understand how the brain works and taking a strength-based approach to developing skills. The research focus of my thesis was on resiliency in Indigenous adults with FASD. Together, we can find the power within you.

I believe that the client is in control in the process of therapy, and I am merely a guide to support you in your journey. I recognize that there are times in our lives where we are faced with adversity and challenges. When these arise, it can be difficult to process and make sense of the concerns that we are faced with in our day to day lives. Sometimes, asking or seeking support can be difficult, but you have made a giant leap by looking at the profiles on this site!

I use an eclectic, client-centered approach that includes mindfulness-based, cognitive-behavioral, motivational interviewing and solution-focused strategies.
Why aren't we as happy as we want to be? Sometimes life is full of stress and challenges, and we might lose our connection with the joyful part of ourselves. My goal is to help clients reconnect with their joy and live meaningful and satisfying lives. A strong client-therapist bond is essential to making therapy effective, therefore I focus on building and maintaining a positive therapeutic relationship that is non-judgmental, respectful, and compassionate. When working with clients I strive to create an atmosphere that promotes safety, self-compassion, insight, and helps to identify steps to take in order to move forward.

The primary psychotherapy modalities I use include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and mindfulness.
We can all, at times, struggle to find solutions and become consumed by negative thinking. I am here to listen, help you organize your problems, and work with you to achieve your desired goals. I firmly believe that everyone is deserving of access to mental health support without limitations. From my experience, commitment and patience from both the counsellor and client are the key drivers for successful therapeutic outcomes and I am ready to do my part!

Hi, I'm glad you're here. I'm Whitney, and I'm a Registered Psychologist. I work with adults on a range of concerns. In all my work, I am guided by the following values: honesty, curiosity, and fun. In therapy, this means that I aim to be transparent about what we're doing and why (if you're someone who needs to know the why before you engage in something-I see you), I seek feedback from clients to ensure therapy is meeting their needs and adapt the process when needed. I also take the opportunity to use creativity and humour to enhance therapy.

I am a Registered Clinical Social Worker with a Master of Social Work degree, specialization in Clinical Social Work. My primary area of focus is divorce and separation, working with the entire family, children (over 12) and individuals going through this big family change. I work with families in the Collaborative Family Law Process, voluntary process, or with those under court-ordered interventions. I believe in early intervention with families going through this difficult time prior to conflict escalating, however if conflict is set in then a direct, solution-focused approach is key.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
