As an integrative therapist, my practice is grounded in decolonial and anti-oppressive values and draws on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Narrative Therapy and Internal Family Systems.
I am a Mi’kmaw, queer therapist and registered social worker offering online therapy that is queer affirming, anti-racist, sex positive, body neutral, feminist, and trauma informed. I integrate an awareness of mental health, addiction, and stigma through lived experience into my practice and embrace a warm sense of humour in my practice that can make therapy seem less intimidating. I work with youth and adults addressing a range of concerns including depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, and intergenerational trauma. I am also experienced in providing affirming support to those who are exploring gender and/or sexuality.

Trauma, PTSD, substance abuse, family dynamics, depression, anxiety and personality disorders.
Lauren is client centered and straight forward. She understands and recognizes the way that trauma can effect one's life. Trauma changes how a person regulates their thoughts and feelings and their ability to care for themselves emotionally and psychologically. Our body's way of coping is immediate and on survival mode and if we never learnt how to cope, we don't know how. As an expert in guiding one to learn how to take their power back at your darkest hour and at your pace, is freeing. Lauren is always willing to meet you where you are.

My counselling practice supports individuals, couples and families through empowering and strength based approaches. My approach is not focused on diagnosis or dysfunction but is instead focused on the strengths and resources people engage with to help them get through hard things. My goal as a counsellor is to help people gain awareness to the factors and circumstances that may be impacting their overall wellbeing, and to support them in making healthy changes for their own healing and growth. My practice is collaborative, and I work hard to help people feel safe and cared for in order to this work.

Experiences, no matter how we perceive them, have the potential to be impactful and alter the direction of our lives. Sometimes these experiences can be confusing when they challenge our previous moral, emotional or logical views of the world around us. These changes do not have to be detrimental regardless of how intense the experience(s) are felt and in the event you find they are please reach out. This process starts with a simple conversation and is then built on a foundation of mutual respect and trust. In short, my job is to ensure you find the control to direct your life based on how you choose to define it.

I have 22 years working in mental health and my focus is on clients who struggle with depression, anxiety, self harm, suicidal ideation, grief, and trauma. My clients are wanting to increase their coping skills, increase self esteem, and minimize negative feelings and behaviors such as suicidal ideation or self harm. The goals of therapy are discussed at the first session and the client decides what will be most beneficial for them. As the therapist, my goal is to ensure it is manageable, discuss expectations, and how to move forward in the counselling process. Counselling is a tool to be used when needed.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
