Reflecting on my cultural experiences, especially as a child of immigrants, also deepens my view of men's difficulties in many areas like family conflict.
Growing up in a society that can make it hard to open up about struggles, especially as a man, I understand that we can miss the ways in which psychotherapy can empower us to take control of and find more meaning in our lives. Sadly, I've seen many clients with struggles (stress, addiction, anxiety, depression, etc.) influenced by feeling overwhelmed, incapable, angry, confused, helpless, insecure, or alone. Bluntly, my success as a healing professional and entrepreneur depends on helping you achieve your goals as efficiently as possible; you feel more confident, capable, and fulfilled, while I'm more likely to get referred.

How do you find hope? You are self-aware, kind, and resilient. You hold dreams and aspirations for a brighter future. While you're always there for family and friends, you often forget to prioritize yourself. This leads to feelings of being overwhelmed and anxious, and self-doubt starts creeping in. It might feel like you're sinking in quicksand, the more you're misunderstood or overlooked, the deeper it gets. I've walked that path myself, so I truly understand how it feels. Now, I want to be your guide.

Any of us may become scared or frustrated by events in our lives. Sometimes parts of our lives just don't seem to be working out. We may become unhappy and come to an impasse. It is inevitable that we come face to face with a crisis of illness or loss. Some may have experienced a relationship breakdown or disturbing dreams and memories. Any one of these can make life seem overwhelming. Even when we find the courage to admit what's happening, those closest to us are not equipped to help us. At these times it is often helpful to talk with a therapist

I help older persons and their family caregivers to navigate the aging journey and care systems, so that you may experience inner peace and embrace this turbulent voyage with hope and meaning.
Do you find that your aging parent is very difficult to care for? Have you noticed your emotions being easily triggered by their actions or comments? Are you having difficult conversations with your family about their care? Taking care of an aging parent can be very emotionally draining but it can also be an opportunity for inner healing, reconciliation, and growth.

My training and areas of practice include CBT, DBT skills, Psychodynamic/Trauma informed, Parenting, Couple/Family therapy, Group work.
The reasons for pursuing counselling are as unique as the individual seeking it out. There could be questions around an emerging identity, a difficult relationship or social issue, a separation/divorce or a child’s school difficulties or emotional distress. Whatever the presenting issue is for clients, there is most often over- whelming feelings of worry, sadness and confusion.

I address all aspects of my clients' lives including friendships, family, culture and spirituality.
I work with adults who are feeling stressed: they may worry, panic or feel shy in social situations, may try to be perfect, may feel badly about themselves, or wish to express themselves more effectively, or to set clearer boundaries with others, or to be more assertive. I also work with people from the straight and LGBTQ communities who are experiencing challenges in their relationships, with sexuality, sexual orientation, alternative relationships, alternative sexualities, and gender. Many experience these challenges, but some may lose a sense of balance in their lives or the ability to enjoy life and relationships while trying to sort out their concerns.

Banupriya has a strong commitment to being helpful, no matter the approach. Her approach to psychotherapy is integrative and is rooted in the belief that longstanding difficulties in our relationships with ourselves and others have their origins in our early developmental experiences. These difficulties may include abandonment anxiety, perfectionism, conflicts about dependence, difficulty being vulnerable with others, challenges asserting boundaries, feeling stuck in unsatisfying relationship patterns, and excessive self-blame.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
