Life can be challenging, especially when you are becoming an adult. Your beliefs may not match with those of your family or friends -- that can be frustrating. You may be questioning where your life leads. Sometimes, crap happens and we eventually need to deal with it. Counselling is an option that can help you understand yourself and others around you. Think of it as hanging out with someone who's going to encourage you to be you.

Sometimes men are great at pretending everything's fine – even when life is falling apart. Trying to carry the weight of the world all by yourself is a sure path to depression, anger issues, self-medicating, lashing out, and increased stress and physical symptoms. Whether you're trying to figure out what your partner wants (what does she mean by "communicate better" anyway?), or you're needing to talk through personal, work, or family issues, I can help you get to a better place. If you're worried that you're the only one, don't. There is literally nothing you can tell me that I haven't heard or worked with before.

I am thrilled to be able to help people, "help themselves." I believe we all have answers to our problems and issues, which talking to a compassionate, caring person helps to uncover. Trauma of any kind can make us susceptible to unhealthy coping mechanisms. Certain situations in life are difficult for us to handle at times. I help to provide strategies and guidance in trying out new ways to cope. Shedding light onto our issues and behaviour which is not working for us places us in in the driver's seat as we control our reactions.

Experiencing life's transitions can be very challenging. Whether these changes are personal or shared, I am here to help you navigate your own transitions. Change is especially difficult when we are young and working to reach developmental and emotional milestones. However, I can assist children to work through these challenges by helping them develop healthy coping strategies and learn to identify as well as manage their emotions. Regardless of your age, life's transitions can be overwhelming, but they do not need to be dealt with alone.

You’re exhausted with all that life has been throwing at you lately. All the strategies you’ve tried have only brought temporary gains or have somehow made things worse. You need support and a new perspective. You have a busy life and don’t have the time to drive all over the place trying desperately to connect with a therapist. Or maybe you've been to therapy but have just never found the right 'fit'. You really need a therapist who cares and who won't judge you. You’ve come to the right place. You can find the support you need here – for yourself, for you and your partner, or even for your preteen or teen.

You’ve lost your way. You’re not the parent or partner you want to be. Reactions come quickly and regrets soon follow. Solutions aren’t coming as easily as they used to, and you alternate between anxiousness and despair. Some days you feel okay and others, like today, you admit that maybe you need a different approach. It feels as if you’ve lost hope and faith in your ability to cope with the many stresses that have come your way. A challenging teen. A relationship conflict. A loss. And so, you find yourself here, contemplating this next step. You’ve come to the right place. Welcome to Insight Counselling Elgin.

Are you struggling with depression, anxiety, grief? Did you grow up in a family that couldn't offer you emotional support due to immigration issues, substance abuse or other factors? Sometimes you feel lost, confused, that you don't belong? Perhaps your religious background was a factor in your feeling alone, lost or shameful and you feel also the weight of your BIPOC experience. You worked hard, and succeeded in many areas but still feel challenged by life and relationships. You may also be neurodivergent (Autistic, ADHD). If that's you, I have the training and experience to help you.

My background holds 40yr of extensive practice experience and continued learning. Expertise:all relationship concerns; recovery/healing from emotional hurts, losses, trauma. Such events, if in early years, can instill persistent insecurity, fears, loneliness and grief, causing troubled close relationships and inner-life: Restricting our core resilient nature where we keep strong potentials to be more open, creative, confident, realistic/effective persons. Mainly treat “self-regulation” problems: Social anxiety, shame/guilt, anger, depression; Overdependencies; Intimacy-sexuality, Communication; Identity-Personality issues;Selfcare.

I became passionate about social work after practicing family law for many years and watching the court system fail parents and children experiencing separation and divorce. I have since completed my MSW to focus on therapeutic and collaborative co-parenting work, mediation, and help individuals navigate high-conflict separation and divorce, and healthy parenting post-divorce. I also enjoy helping individuals with anxiety, perfectionism, self-esteem, academic and career issues. Moreover, I have experience in supporting parents with their children’s learning disabilities, school, and issues with peers.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
