I've been a therapist for over 15 years, working with adults, caregivers, youth and children. The themes I work with include relational difficulties, family conflict, parenting, life transitions, loss, trauma, immigration, sexual orientation, anxiety and depression. I believe culture, gender, race and other identities play a role in our lives, as do safety, connection and trust. I aim to honour and create space for these qualities and my style is collaborative and conversational. I believe in lived experiences and try to bring mine, being a queer immigrant parent, to practice. I also offer therapy in English and Hebrew.

From grief & loss, relationships, family conflicts, anxiety, illness and addictions.
My specialization is working with Indigenous people. I know how life can get overwhelming and direction in life can become complicated. Together we will weave through those difficulties and find strategies and self discovery. My approach is friendly, respectful and professional. I have a passion to support those who struggle with addictions and work towards recovery. Additionally, I want to support the families who have loved ones struggling with substance abuse.

Anxiety, depression, LGBTQ+, boundaries and codependence are focuses for me, as well as couples work (straight, LGBTQ+, partners, family).
Ready to talk about it? It can be hard to make that first move, that first call. But whether you are in crisis or you want to understand why you are just "getting by", we can start now to figure it out together. Here, you will find a safe, inclusive and accepting space, along with a warm and interactive approach to exploring your story. Having trouble setting boundaries? Looking for new ways to communicate with your partner? Searching for a sense of self that has been lost - either in the context of a relationship or just in the struggles of daily life? These are only some of the challenges we can start to make sense of together.

Clinical specialties include concurrent disorders, addictions, mood disorders, trauma based issues, relationship and family problems.
Thank you for considering therapy at The Cope Clinic. My practice is based upon the belief that the emotional and behavioural issues that confound us can become understood through a guided exploration in a supportive and collaberative therapeutic alliance. My clinical experience of over 40 years has been attained through work with youth offenders, court ordered psychological assessments, residential treatment for religious professionals and work in a private mental health and addiction centre. I have had a private practice over 18 years. Due to the Covid outbreaks, I now see clients only through online methods.

As an attachment-informed trauma therapist, I have over 13 years of experience in using evidence-based modalities including Internal Family Systems and EMDR therapy.
I am attuned and compassionate in my approach to therapy. I offer a non-judgmental presence to help you feel relaxed and clear about the obstacles you want to overcome. Painful emotions often provide useful clues into beliefs about ourselves, other people and the world. This understanding paired with new choices will help you to move beyond what no longer serves you. Using empirical techniques adapted to your needs we will work together on practical ways to create lasting change in your life and relationships. My intention is for you to leave sessions feeling inspired to approach life from a new vantage point.

Therapy Photos is a groundbreaking psychotherapy service intertwining the art of photography with the journey of emotional healing. Specializing in women's health such as fertility challenges, motherhood and parenting, but open to all individuals, Gillian uses evidence-based modalities like emotion-focused family therapy (EFFT) and Internal Family Systems (IFS) to help clients reach their goals. Simply by using the camera on your phone, clients explore their inner landscape, capturing and expressing emotions that words sometimes fail to convey, using the lens as a tool for self-discovery while the psychotherapy helps you heal.

Maybe you're here because you are struggling in your primary relationship; having the same old arguments with your partner, feeling disconnected & longing for more intimacy, or dealing with a difficult life event, such as a betrayal. Perhaps you're looking for help because you are feeling stressed out, anxious, and are tired of being so hard on yourself. Or maybe you're having a difficult time relating to family members or friends - unresolved tension with parents, feeling at sea with how to relate to your kids, or not feeling like you can relax & be yourself around others. The focus of my work is helping people with relationships.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
