My areas of expertise are diverse with an emphasis on relationship issues, and life transitions) My professional experience includes training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Gottman, and Functional Family Therapy.
Congratulations on taking charge of your life! You are one step closer to getting the help and support that you seek. Asking for help requires courage, and vulnerability, and acknowledging that we all have limitations in our abilities and capacity to handle stress. Asking for help doesn't mean there is something wrong with you, or that you are "broken." Rather it may be that you don't know what to do, or need someone to help guide you through the process. Therapy is meant to be a safe place for you to explore your thoughts, fears, worries and hopes for the future in seeking meaningful chaange without judgement or expectations.

My approach to counselling is specific to each client I work with. I believe the therapeutic process is highly creative and that it relies equally on both spontaneous diversion and meticulous planning. In addition to direct focus on the individual, I also believe deeply in the power of family dynamics, social structure, and the societal pressures that exist in our highly complex modern world.

My goal is to help every client thrive emotionally, psychologically, and intellectually. I am equally as interested to hear a client’s story of trauma, loss, regret, loneliness, and difficult family dynamics, as I am to listen about times filled with purpose, hope, and happiness. I pay close attention to what is said, in addition to what is left unsaid, to uncover patterns of core beliefs.

My ideal family is one that is tired of hurting each other. My ideal family has at least one family member, usually a teenager, impacted by drugs, alcohol, and process addictions like video games. The healthy part of the family is motivated by fear to use control to stop their teenager from their addictive behaviour. If control is ineffective then power struggles can develop which tear at the family power structures. My ideal family has at least one family member who learns addictions are rooted in multigerational issues, trauma, and mental illness. Families want healthy loving interconnections and not power struggles.

We all experience different problems from time to time because, well, we are human! Life can seem unfair and there are moments when we might feel hopeless and defeated. Some problems might appear larger than they really are and something that seems like a small problem might affect you greatly. Regardless of what type of problem you have, we can all use help at different times in our lives. The best thing one can do is talk about it. It might take one conversation or several, but it could be the best decision you will ever make. I look forward to speaking with you!

Carson integrates evidence-based treatments to help individuals, couples, and families attain a higher quality of life by tackling unhealthy beliefs and behaviours that create barriers to growth, healing, and positive relationships with self and others. As therapy can be a challenging process, Carson takes the time to build a safe, non-judgmental, and trusting environment, getting to know each individual’s unique story, and how their experiences have shaped their beliefs, behaviors, and view of the world. Through a collaborative approach based on a strong therapeutic relationship, Carson empowers clients to make positive change.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
