Are you struggling with people-pleasing? Does it feel hard or even impossible to set boundaries? Often when we experience these challenges we tend to also struggle with self-esteem, anxiety, and perfectionism. We might feel burnt out or dissatisfied, and it can be difficult to imagine things could be different. When we fall into people-pleasing patterns we often focus on what we feel is expected of us, leading to disconnection from our own wants, needs, and aspirations.

I support individuals dealing with challenges or trauma, such as grief and loss, anxiety, anger management, depression, divorce/separation, family conflict, work-life balance, health and addiction issues, eating disorders, gender identity, low self-esteem, loneliness and other life stressors.
I’m a registered Social Worker M.S.W., R.S.W. For over 20 years, I’ve been providing counselling to children, youth, adults and families of different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Working with these populations has shown me that when individuals feel safe, respected, heard and appreciated for who they are, they respond to life challenges with creativity and resilience. My practice is guided by these core values. I take great care to create an ambiance where a genuine human connection takes place.

When overwhelming emotions limit the pursuit of our responsibilities or passions in life there are effective strategies that can help regulate and minimize the emotional storms as well as provide the resilience needed to thrive in your life despite those storms. Life can be very difficult, unlike physical pain that is usually hard to ignore therefore treatment is sought after, emotional pain is unfortunately often ignored hoping it goes away. Anger, stress, anxiety, low moods, loss and relationship upheavals are all issues that can be better worked through with professional support through those storms. My name is Tim Kahtava, I

I walk with people of all ages during life’s challenging moments, when the path is not visible. Grounded in a client-centred, attachment-based framework, I draw on evidenced based therapies of: Cognitive-Behavioural (CBT), Mindfulness, Humanistic, Psychodynamic, and Internal Family Systems (IFS).
During times of stress our experiences can seem confusing and overwhelming. Having a safe space to express our thoughts out loud helps bring clarity to our experience. Whether you are working through a current stressor or an older wound, identifying your thoughts and feelings helps you understand your unmet needs. I work with clients to identify longstanding automatic attachment patterns that may be maintaining beliefs and reactions that are no longer helpful and that are getting in the way of attaining fulfillment.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
