Family systems thinking offers a very different way of considering and dealing with the difficulties that life brings.
I see a variety of clients, but primarily work with young adults ages 20-40 on the issues of this stage of life, including dating and relationships, marital challenges, defining career and developing future goals. I also work with parents with concerns about young adult children. I am able to help clients who are dealing with stress, depression, anxiety, substance use, illness, pain, career, sexual or financial challenges, or grief and loss. My goal is with each client is to help them understand and reframe problems, reduce anxiety and open up lines of communication. And, who knows? Maybe even to find a little humour in it all!

In my approach, I employ cutting-edge tools such as EMDR, OEI and LENS neurofeedback in addition to traditional talk therapy approaches like CBT, Internal Family Systems and Somatic Experiencing.
Let's face it, finding the right counsellor fit can be intimidating. Having to share vulnerably with a stranger is not something that most people find comfortable and yet the benefits can be transformative when the environment is right. The approach I take as a counsellor is often described as a mix of casual and easy-going with a matching of investigative curiosity and problem-solving. The goal of my work is to help clients deepen their understanding of themselves, their situation, and their environment so that they can best make an informed decision on how to move forward and ultimately improve their quality of life and agency.

Are you feeling disconnected from those around you? You might find yourself stuck in the same arguments or patterns with your loved one(s). Or you may be struggling to find a sense of belonging in your family, workplace, or a new community. This sense of isolation can magnify already stressful situations and have negative impacts on both your emotional and physical health. With support, you can experience the growth and healing that can come from reconnecting with yourself, and strengthening your relationship with others. My identities and experiences have shaped me to become the counsellor I am today, a wounded healer.

You are not alone! I believe you are capable of not just surviving, but thriving. Together we can start to explore the reasons why and build your toolbox to ease some of those challenges.

I have over twenty years’ experience working with children, youth, adults and families from diverse cultures. I specialise in providing treatment that specifically addresses individual and family needs, strengths, challenges and obstacles. My approach is strength-based, trauma-informed and collaborative. Most problems are caused by many overlapping factors. Therapy usually involves exploring the big picture and developing practical and constructive ways to support well-being and change. Sometimes it is helpful to explore ways in which past experiences and relationships are affecting current experiences and behaviour.

I have assisted clients from diverse backgrounds in addressing psychological and emotional distress, family challenges, childhood trauma, assault, and challenges related to LGBTQIA+ experiences.
“It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.” I offer counselling services through an anti-oppressive lens, which takes in the larger contexts around the individual. I strive to create a welcoming, supportive environment where we can collaborate and create a path toward awareness and empathy while implementing practical skills.

I weave mind-body-spirit approaches that can involve working with your nervous system & emotions, dreams, family & ancestry, attachment style, inner critic, shadow, and inner child.
I believe we all yearn for a deeper connection to ourself and to those around us, but we may find ourselves repeating unhelpful patterns, sacrificing our needs, and communicating in ways that do not support us or our relationships. I often work with individuals or couples who may be experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, perceptions of low self-worth and powerlessness, feelings of abandonment, shame, and other forms of wounding related to difficult upbringings, life experiences, and trauma.

Family therapy is a way to address issues that occur within the family system.
I draw on over 35 years of professional experience in working with adolescents, adults and families. By providing a safe non judgmental environment I can support you to explore the thoughts and belief patterns that create your reactions. When you recognize patterns of interactions and triggers, together we explore and cultivate an understanding of how those patterns started. You determine, if these patterns continue to serve you. I can help bring what is unconscious, conscious so you can choose how you respond in any given situation. You get to create a life that is more in line with your goals, values and ideals.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
