Combining both body and mind approaches, I draw from various modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Internal Family Systems, EMDR, and attachment- based theories in my work with clients.
In my work, I strive to create a safe, welcoming, and comfortable environment for clients to explore and remove life barriers. I believe that all behavior does serve a purpose, and that purpose is usually to meet an unmet need. Through the work of therapy, you can develop a deeper understanding of what protective mechanisms such as anxiety, self- harm, and addiction have played a role in your life. Together, we can explore and discover what you need to feel supported to overcome these challenges and to experience growth and change.

I understand it can be difficult to reach out for help, whether you or your loved ones are experiencing substance use issues, anxiety, depression, pornography issues, family conflict, or problems with interpersonal relationships.
As a Registered Clinical Counsellor/Psychotherapist with 25 years of experience working with individuals, couples, and families, I use a client-centred, integrative approach to address the therapeutic goals of clients. No one should be defined by their diagnoses, and rather than placing emphasis on what is not working, I collaborate with clients to determine what actions can be taken to improve on their circumstances. All individuals exist along their own continuum of mental health, and with adequate supports and a focus on holistic well-being, every client can be nurtured towards growth and a healthier sense of self.

Family therapy is a way to address issues that occur within the family system.
I draw on over 35 years of professional experience in working with adolescents, adults and families. By providing a safe non judgmental environment I can support you to explore the thoughts and belief patterns that create your reactions. When you recognize patterns of interactions and triggers, together we explore and cultivate an understanding of how those patterns started. You determine, if these patterns continue to serve you. I can help bring what is unconscious, conscious so you can choose how you respond in any given situation. You get to create a life that is more in line with your goals, values and ideals.

When parents approach for help with their child's disordered eating, a Family-Based (aka Maudsley) approach is appropriate to help restore regular eating and weight.
As a Registered Psychologist, I work from a positive place, seeing disordered behaviours as ways of coping that create problems as well as solves them. I work collaboratively with my clients to identify their goals and desires. We may use a motivational approach at first, if appropriate. Then we may focus on barriers to recovery, dysfunctional thinking, practical strategies for change, and past painful experiences or trauma, if relevant, using relationship-based, cognitive behaviour therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and emotion focused approaches. At the end of our session, I write my notes in the form of a letter to share.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
