I have been a counselling therapist for over half a decade, grew up in a rural community with a large family and now live in Calgary with my husband of seven years and two children.
My goal in therapy is to cultivate a space where you will feel genuinely heard and understood. I offer a comfortable space marked by empathy and acceptance, in which anyone is welcomed to voice issues and concerns. I enjoy working with youth, adolescents, couples, and families and bring a gentle and empathetic presence to each client session. I understand that you may desire to integrate spirituality into your therapy, and am willing to use my Christian faith, and other spiritual resources to guide you through difficulty and challenge.

I have 10+ years working with clients experiencing anxiety, mood disorders, school refusal, friendship concerns, navigating family relationships, suicidal ideation/self-harm, and sexual/gender identity. I have worked with adult and youth clients with these concerns, along with relationships, infidelity, and parenting. My practice also includes working with couples, polycules, and consensual non-monogamy. I feel we all have a huge capacity for resilience and learning and enjoy co-creating successful therapeutic relationships which are trauma-informed and recognize client's lived experiences.

I use an eclectic approach to therapy but primarily draw from Narrative therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Family Systems Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
My name is Arevik (Air-ah-vick) and I would like to help you find a clear path to the complex journey that you are currently on. Sometimes our lives can become foggy with life transitions, extra responsibilities, social and familial pressures... At times it can simply feel too much. We may start feeling overwhelmed, lost, and unmotivated about our next steps. Working harder does not seem to do the trick and soon, we end up burning out and feeling hopeless. I am here to guide you towards a more manageable path, one that feels more inviting.

The two main theoretical frameworks that I work within are: (1) Family Systems Therapy, where change is viewed in terms of the patterns of interaction between family members.
At some point in our lives we find ourselves feeling overwhelmed with a problem and unable to find a way out. Reaching out for support can provide an opportunity to learn alternative, healthier ways to cope and discover one's true self. My training in Marriage and Family Therapy and my diverse clinical experience, have allowed me to assist clients to discover and break their existing patterns that are keeping them stuck. Therefore, allowing them to develop insight, awareness, and a new outlook on the challenges they are facing, enabling them to lead more fulfilled lives and build stronger relationships.

Are you or someone in your family struggling with anxiety, fragile self-esteem or low mood? Does it seem like it started off small but feels like it is escalating and you are unsure of how to help them or yourself? Growing up can be hard. Many children and teens today face increased anxiety, social challenges, learning difficulties, depression, loss or family challenges like divorce or illness of a parent or loved one. In adulthood, the challenges may look different, but age does not shield us from the challenges caused by career pressures, overwhelm or blows to our confidence.

I utilize a variety of therapeutic approaches and tools, including (but not limited to) CBT, ACT, narrative therapy, hypnosis, trauma-informed therapy, solution-focused therapy, couples therapy, family systems, and brief therapies.
In life, we can find ourselves challenged in ways we did not expect or anticipate. Life can become difficult and overwhelming to manage at times. In such moments, it can be helpful to seek support from someone who might help unearth possibilities and support you in finding healthier and adaptive ways to manage and cope. It is my belief that developing a strong, trusting, and collaborative therapeutic relationship is the cornerstone to therapeutic success. Through mutual respect, genuine empathy, and trust, individuals can be seen and heard, and encouraged to create the changes they want in their lives.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
