An increasing number of people are turning to mental health services to help improve their quality of life. Individuals of all ages, genders and walks of life are turning to trusted therapists to help them with a wide variety of issues. If you struggle to manage your emotions; if you feel stuck in patterns that don't work for you anymore; if you feel like you're struggling at work, in relationships, or in family life; if you're having a hard time understanding yourself - then counselling therapy might be an important next step for you.

When I’m not listening to mental wellness podcasts or boring my family and friends with fun facts about Attachment theory, you can find me exploring the bike paths of Ottawa or curled up on my couch, nose in book, coffee in hand.
*VIRTUAL PRACTICE - NOW ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS* I’m so glad you’re here. Telling our story takes courage. If there is one thing I know, it’s that asking for help is a breathtaking act of raw bravery. Whatever has propelled you to this point, welcome. Therapy is a place to talk about the tough stuff: trauma, heartache, loss, stress. It’s also a place to talk about your hopes, longings, goals, and dreams…your identity: the you that you are and maybe, if we’re daring, the you that you want to be.

My name is Triena McGuirk and I am a Social Worker in private practice. Over the course of my experiences, I have come to learn with certainty that life is chaotic and the one thing we truly have control over is how we respond. I walk with people of all ages during life’s challenging moments, when the path is not visible. My goal as a Therapist is to assist those I serve (individuals, couples and families) in reconciling the discomfort of their experience and harness the wisdom it carries to invite more of what aligns into your life. I am diligent and resourceful in my pursuit of helping and hope those I serve leave our time

I have postgraduate training in Brainspotting (I am certified by David Grand & completed phases 1, 2, 3, 4), Internal Family Systems (IFS Institute Level 1, 2, & advanced courses), MI, & DBT.
Real change, healing, and growth happens from the inside out. This is a process of mutual empowerment that occurs through our genuine relationships, as we bring parts of ourselves and hidden parts of our experience into the light of a compassionate awareness. In psychotherapy we can create an authentic space of acceptance to explore life's troubles with compassion, curiosity, and courage. Together we may discover, become, heal, and grow. Whatever brings you to psychotherapy, it is with respect and gratitude that I commit to walk beside you on this path. "A journey of a thousand miles begins where one is and taking a single step."

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
