It's heartbreaking to watch your child or teen struggle. As a parent or guardian, you know your child best, and can clearly see when they are hurting. Luckily, they have shared a little about their experience, but you still feel uncertain about their needs- powerless to do anything about their problems. It feels like things will never change. They have so much potential, and you would hate to see them miss it.

I understand the courage it takes to reach out for support for yourself or a loved one. I provide services for those age 8 and older relating to neurodiversity and anxiety. With gentle guidance, support and time, challenges and stressors can provide a better understanding of one's self and use of natural talents. As we co-create a safe and trusting relationship, I will model the empathy, encouragement, and compassion that you deserve for yourself. At any age and stage, new learning can inspire a shift in wellness, coping strategies and healthy habits. My hope is that we can explore, visualize and create meaningful steps forward.

I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and a Certified Clinical Traumatologist and hold an Advanced Certificate in Couple and Family Therapy Studies from University of Guelph.
I hold compassion for all you have been through and where you are now. I approach therapy as a collaboration between you and I, where you are respected and honoured and your strengths are highlighted. We work at a safe pace in line with your needs. I recognize how hard it is to be a human in this world and the support required to get through challenging and transitional times, as well as the possibility for resilient growth and recovery. I am an avid lover of music, art and dance, believing that creativity is a part of being alive. I work to integrate this into my practice, along with a spiritual and intuitive sense.

Do you feel disconnected with yourself or in your relationships? Maybe past experiences have contributed to this. Or you recognize the challenge in our tech-savvy world, to unplug and tune in to yourself and to each other. Our early and ongoing experiences with family, friends, significant other(s), etc impact how we connect and attach; they impact mental health and well-being. We are more likely to thrive when we feel safely and securely connected to another person(s). When our relationships are instead overwhelmed with tension, pain, lack of understanding, etc we often struggle to feel and manage well.

Whatever you are experiencing in your world, be it individual fear, anxiety, stress or family issues, sometimes coping mechanisms cease to work.

If you're feeling disconnected, distracted, and detached from your life, it may be time to look at why. Why can't I connect, why am I not able to just "get over" my past, or why does it all feel so meaningless? Maybe there are other questions, like “what am I doing with my life” or “who do I want to be?”. It’s okay to take time that's just for you, to look at your life and see both the big picture and explore the often overlooked details. With the right support, you can feel more present, connected, and in control of your life.

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
