My training includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, Narrative Therapy, Emotionally-Focused Therapy, Family Therapy with Psycho-dynamic Orientation and Solution-Focused Therapy.
We humans suffer because we don’t get what we want and get what we don’t want. Most of us want to find a quick cure to our emotional pain. Quick cures sedate the pain which is the source of Wisdom, Compassion, Understanding and Real Love. My approach is for the person who wants to answer the timeless questions of: “Who am I?”, “Where did I come from?”, “Where am I going?” from their own depths and to their full understanding. It is in this journey, through self-inquiry, that they become happier, wiser and more compassionate.

I draw on several approaches that include family systems, attachment theory and emotional focused therapy.
At Compassionate Counselling, I provide therapy to individuals, couples and parents. I offer both psychotherapy and relationship coaching. I believe in the importance of building a strong, solid, trusting relationship with all my clients and respect the need to remain open and flexible to the differing and changing needs of all individuals. My professional style is relaxed, gentle and welcoming. I work on the principle that a good therapist is like a cast on a broken leg, there for awhile to support the injury while healing and then gently removed as the leg repairs itself.

In the summer, you can find me paddling on the lake, eagerly greeting any and all dogs, or sitting in a park eating chocolate with family and friends.
“I know I have people who care about me, but I still feel alone.” “People tell me I’m safe, but I still feel scared.” “I know it’s not my fault, but I still feel guilty.” If any of these thoughts sound familiar, you are not alone. It is incredibly common for one part of our brain to feel that things are wrong, even if we don’t fully understand why or know what to do about it. In my personal and professional life as a queer, brown, and trauma-focused therapist, I have seen that therapy can help us process our past experiences and create a space for us to heal.

Often clients struggle with past difficulties encountered during childhood. Many of these painful, even traumatic experiences occur within their family of origin or with peers. As the person enters adulthood and then moves through later milestones, their childhood wounds can hinder present healthy development and interfere with their ability to become their authentic selves. Relational issues emerge as the person seeks intimacy and connection with others. Feelings of loneliness and isolation can result in anxiety and depression because these interpersonal challenges interfere with one's core sense of fulfillment and meaning in life.

Through various forms of therapy, one can explore different perspectives, coping skills, and motivators to establish better relationships; self-esteem and self-direction; deal with complicated family or couple dynamics; face a significant crisis or transition; and make cognitive and behavioral changes to better emotional, mental, and physical health.
They say our greatest weakness lies in giving up! We have all been there. I decided that if life was going to be difficult, I would become its greatest “warrior” and teach others to do the same. Too often we use our armour to hide our inner selves, rather than see it as our strength which only comes from taking a risk, facing our fears, taking a step forward, and learning that every battle is won with wisdom. I am here to empower you to take that chance on yourself — your mind is a powerful force, but you are its master!

With a specialization in couple and family psychotherapy, I aim to strengthen relational bonds by strengthening attachment security, improving communication patterns and identifying family dynamics.
Taking this first step toward healing is the most courageous, yet intimidating and vulnerable experience one may ever take. I recognize this, and welcome you into a safe space with compassion, warmth and empathy. Over the last few years, I have worked with couples, families and individuals searching for hope in times of crisis. I will work collaboratively with you to process and explore the roots of your emotional distress and support you toward increasing resilience and self-awareness. I can also help you to navigate through feeling "stuck" and/or "lost" due to life transitions and traumatic experiences.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
