I believe each individaul, couple and family has the wisdom to create one's own unique life story.
I have been a registered psychologist for nearly 40 years. I have been part of the healing journeys for individuals of all ages (child to seniors), couples and families. I don't know if I have an ideal client other than someone who is open to sharing the story of their life and developing resiliency in some way. With children and youth, they have a special place given their vulnerability and yet wonderful creativity.

I understand what you’re carrying is heavy. Therapists in the past were cold and removed, dismissed and diminished you, not understanding the complexity of gender and identity. You’ve researched, journaled, listened to the podcasts, tried CBT, DBT, breathing exercises; anything to release the fear of having to navigate a dangerous world of violence, hate, oppression, and misinformation. A world that wants you erased. I know this because I see so much of my own story in yours; the black sheep (cycle breaker, dreamer) in a family or workplace that doesn’t know you and makes no effort to do so. You want to feel seen, heard, respected.

Some of the therapeutic models I utilize include Family Systems Theory, Polyvagal Theory, EMDR, ART, and Somatic Experiencing.
If you are struggling, know that you are not alone. Life can be hard. The idea that its supposed to be easy, or that if we struggle it means we are failing, or not enough, is wrong. These harmful beliefs along with our personal and difficult life experiences, can cause disconnection from ourselves and others. I believe this disconnection is the source of much of our suffering. I am here to support you on your unique healing journey as you rediscover the inherent resilience and capacity for healing and joy that has always been within you.

Do you struggle with anxiety, grief, the effects of trauma, or an inability to feel worthy? Are you finding it difficult to show up for yourself and others in the ways that you want to? Do you feel overwhelmed by a challenging relationship, difficult family dynamics, or the demands of daily life and wonder if things will ever get easier or more manageable? Right now, so many of us are experiencing increased worry, loss of direction, and uncertainty and feel paralyzed. But what if you have the capacity to create positive change and all you need is a little support to take the next right step toward the life you want to live?

Specifically, who you were, who you are, and who you hope to be as an individual, couple, and family.
We all have experiences that turn our world upside down. These experiences can be anything, but when it happens, we can feel confused, lost, or stuck while struggling to adjust to our new reality. I aim to support clients so that they gain self-knowledge, build resilience, and feel capable in their "new normal." As a Registered Psychologist, I work with individuals (adult and teens), couples, and families to help them achieve and maintain mental wellness while going through experiences that challenge them. I believe all challenges occur within a context, so I include social and cultural factors into my work with all clients.

In addition to depression, anxiety, and anger issues; I have a special focus on family wellness.
Heightened symptoms of anxiety can cause difficulty with concentration, confusion, irritability and frustration. Are you are overthinking, worrying, and having trouble making sense of your emotions? Symptoms of depression can cause you to shut down due to an increase of stress. This can make socializing, work-related tasks, and taking care of yourself feel too overwhelming. Some symptoms of anxiety and/or depression can leave you feeling emotionally and physically exhausted. You are here for a reason. Allow me to support you as you deserve to be well and find yourself again.

For clients who are looking for a more integrative approach to therapy connecting mind, body, soul, I draw from various somatic psychology approaches including: The Hakomi Method, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and Internal Family Systems Therapy.
My training is varied, and I work in an integrative way, connecting mind, body, and soul. My perspective on helping and healing draws from a blend of psychology approaches as well as a variety of complementary and alternative philosophies, such as mindfulness. A key foundation of all the work is based in trauma-informed practice. Being an integrative therapist and having a broad range of training is beneficial. It allows me to draw from a toolbox to develop inclusive, effective, and individualized treatment plans to best meet the needs of my clients.

I use Hakomi Mindfulness-based Body-Psychotherapy, Narrative Therapy, Systemic Family Therapy, and Internal Family Systems-informed approaches to therapy and counselling.
We all carry multiple stories about our selves, our lives, and our experiences. There are parts in our stories that are sometimes hidden from our awareness. It is in the calm noticing, re-discovery, and re-telling of our stories that we can find and connect with parts of ourselves that may need healing, and also parts of ourselves that are insightful, strong, and brilliant even in the midst of hardship and darkness. Through facilitating, witnessing, and holding space together, we can engage in our personal work of healing. I look forward to connecting with you.

I use Family Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and Trauma Therapy including Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and Emotion Focused Therapy, and Gottman Method (couples therapy) interwoven in practice.
There’s a phrase that resonates so well in our northern hemisphere: feeling snowed under. It brings a rather-Canadian image to mind along with a feeling of overwhelm. Sometimes, life feels like we’ve been left snowed under and we find ourselves spinning our wheels. It can be exhausting. I’m here to help. I’ve worked in child, adolescent, family and young adult mental health for over 20 years. I’m a parent, a partner, a professional in the field, and the learning never ends. Whether it’s raising our families or learning about the relationships we hold within ourselves, there are ways to decrease the distress and find an easier path.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
