Life is stressful. Work, family and friends, parenting. So many early life experiences continue to impact our quality of life: abuse, medical and other trauma, family dynamics, loss. We know physical and emotional are interwoven and must be treated as such. Mind body connection with physical symptoms and emotional pain is real. The body remembers old trauma and tells us things are not right. It also heals when we pay attention to the right things and build in resources.

I have over 23 years of experience providing assessments and psychotherapy; first as a psychiatric nurse, then as a family counsellor and in 2012 as a psychologist in private practice.
According to the American Psychological Association, “Psychologists help people of all ages live happier, healthier and more productive lives.” Through the use of various psychotherapy methods and collaborative treatment measures, my patients develop life-changing habits to help them cope with any of life’s various obstacles. My therapy sessions are designed to dissect personal issues and provide patients with effective tools to help them see the glass half full instead of half empty.

Counselling for Emotional and Narcissistic Abuse. Whether its family or your partner who have toxic traits, you are noticing the anxiety this relationship is causing you and the cycle never ends of being sucked in with love bombing just to be hurt again with put downs and humiliation. I know how painfully lonely and isolating it can be to make that decision to step away from the abuse. There is a lot of shame that comes up, as well as self doubt. You may even question if YOU are narcissistic. I help support and empower women to find the courage in their journey to go from surviving to thriving and turn guilt into confidence!

I aim to meet my clients apart from the pretension and stigmas of the psychology world, as well as the norms of culture/society in general. Creating a space apart from all the things we think we need to be and should be allows for an authenticity to engage the obstacles in life in a new way. Therapy should not be “one size fits all” and so with the expertise that you have of your life, combined with my skills and training, we can work together to get past both the internal and external things keeping you from being more of the human you were meant to be; creating a new mental space where you can continue to grow and thrive.

You can’t stay connected to the good life, others, or even yourself… This is a horrible place to be! But we don’t have to live here. What you need is someone with experience and skill to come alongside you, in acceptance, bringing clarity – illuminating reasons why this has been happening to you; all of which bring safety, hope, and direction to your life. I was once here, but now I’m not; now I have a roadmap to get you out of here…

Are you open to new possibilities? In order to understand who you want to be, you have to know who you are first. Gain insight and awareness into your situation, and learn to extract the lessons from your past struggles to develop new ways of coping and managing the challenges in your life. From early on, people learn behaviors to protect themselves for survival — but what worked in the past may no longer be helpful today. When basic human needs aren’t met, the outcome is often depression, anxiety, relationship conflict, or even addiction.

My practice, over the years, has become more and more attuned to problems of conflict and issues of violence. As a trained child psychologist, I have seen first hand the raw damage an emotional injury continues to create. As a clinician, it has not been unusual for me to see the same sorts of trauma: yet locked away in one's memory, living on in current behaviour. This is what conflict can do. The issues just seem to keep on repeating themselves, inevitably with the same unfortunate outcomes. (My role sometimes is the Life Coach who becomes a personal guide.)

Accepting new clients, veterans and first responders welcome! I am a Provisional Registered Psychologist in Alberta P7592, with over 25 years of counselling experience, supporting adolescents, adults and families struggling with complex behavioural and mental health concerns. It has been an honour supporting, and witnessing transformative changes in both individuals, and collective systems; within the context of public health care, corporate settings, and private practice. I believe that symptoms often result from the accumulation of unresolved trauma and complex adverse life experiences. Healing is possible!

Critical relationships from the past and present shape our thoughts about (a) ourselves, (b) others and (c) our expectations for relationships. Thoughts and expectations shaped by our experience, in turn, shape our perceptions and influence the choices we make and the things we do--often in limiting and self-defeating ways. When our need for safe, meaningful and satisfying connection is complicated by difficulty of some sort, we frequently develop troubling symptoms.

I create a supportive and collaborative space for individuals, couples and families to grow, and work toward their desired outcomes. I work with people with goals to reduce difficult emotions, improve relationships or careers, navigate life changes, and/or move through the grief process. Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
