Being pulled in many different directions is exhausting. Work, family and personal stress can be overwhelming, and cause us to shut down, become upset or even feel anxious. From work to sleep to relationships, joy is missing. You might feel burned out, alone, and perhaps disconnected from your own body. You might have tried other resources and they aren't working. You don’t know where to turn. Here’s where I come in. I have worked through personal trauma, work-related stress, and experienced career changes. Now I seek to provide a safe place for people to find a helpful way forward.

I approach the family as a whole, working with parents and children to improve the life of the whole family.
My background is in systems theory; the idea that everyone is connected to those around them, with influence between all those people, organizations, and cultures. My approach to therapy is primarily Cognitive Behavioral Therapy but I also see a need for insight into the meaning that we make/have made of things and how that impacts our present. Therapy then, involves opening space for a person to increase awareness of their own process and to see alternative perspectives, thereby empowered to make different life decisions. It is so exciting to see someone realize that they have the power to change their perspective and their life!

The theories that resonate the most with me are internal family systems (we have different parts of ourselves that may feel different ways at any given time), attachment (our past deeply impacts our present and our relationships), and narrative therapy (the story we tell ourselves about ourselves).
Hi! Thank you for taking a moment to read my bio and see if I am a good fit for you at this time. My approach is simple; I want you to achieve your goals. Maybe your goal is feeling more like yourself, processing an unanticipated event in your life, or learning what it takes to make some changes. I will support and equip you through it all. As a professional coach and counsellor, we will discuss your past, present, and future at a pace dictated by you. I try to offer structure and flexibility as we navigate our time together and try to understand all the aspects of your life to get a clear picture of what it feels like to be you.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
