For the past 14 years, I have worked and trained in a variety of settings, including children's mental health facilities, schools, hospitals, and private practice. I utilize a variety of therapeutic approaches and tools, including (but not limited to) CBT, ACT, narrative therapy, hypnosis, trauma-informed therapy, solution-focused therapy, couples therapy, family systems, and brief therapies.
In life, we can find ourselves challenged in ways we did not expect or anticipate. Life can become difficult and overwhelming to manage at times. In such moments, it can be helpful to seek support from someone who might help unearth possibilities and support you in finding healthier and adaptive ways to manage and cope. It is my belief that developing a strong, trusting, and collaborative therapeutic relationship is the cornerstone to therapeutic success. Through mutual respect, genuine empathy, and trust, individuals can be seen and heard, and encouraged to create the changes they want in their lives.

I specialize in relationship counselling (couple and family), parenting support, trauma counselling (EMDR Therapy), play and art-based counselling with children in addition to working with adolescents, stress, anxiety and other mental health issues.
My goal is to connect with you in a safe, nonjudgmental environment. I work collaboratively with my clients towards finding relief and life changing solutions, recognizing that people have power and strength within them. Whether it's problematic relationships, parenting support, stress, family dynamics, mental health issues or trauma that is impacting your life, I have seen over and over that change can happen. I offer a warm approach to therapy and welcome any struggle, small or large. Although I work with a variety of adult clients I am known for easily connecting with children and adolescents.

I use Family Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and Trauma Therapy including Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and Emotion Focused Therapy, and Gottman Method (couples therapy) interwoven in practice.
There’s a phrase that resonates so well in our northern hemisphere: feeling snowed under. It brings a rather-Canadian image to mind along with a feeling of overwhelm. Sometimes, life feels like we’ve been left snowed under and we find ourselves spinning our wheels. It can be exhausting. I’m here to help. I’ve worked in child, adolescent, family and young adult mental health for over 20 years. I’m a parent, a partner, a professional in the field, and the learning never ends. Whether it’s raising our families or learning about the relationships we hold within ourselves, there are ways to decrease the distress and find an easier path.

I use an eclectic approach to therapy but primarily draw from Narrative therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Family Systems Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
My name is Arevik (Air-ah-vick) and I would like to help you find a clear path to the complex journey that you are currently on. Sometimes our lives can become foggy with life transitions, extra responsibilities, social and familial pressures... At times it can simply feel too much. We may start feeling overwhelmed, lost, and unmotivated about our next steps. Working harder does not seem to do the trick and soon, we end up burning out and feeling hopeless. I am here to guide you towards a more manageable path, one that feels more inviting.

My therapeutic focus is on anxiety, stress, depression, addiction, loss and grief, couples counselling, family conflict, parenting skills, life transitions, coping skills, mindfulness, self-care, boundaries/assertiveness, self-esteem, spirituality and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
When it comes to living, life can be full of stressors, disappointments, changes, challenges and losses that can cause a range of emotional, mental and physical responses. In therapy, I take the approach that all experiences, both internal and external, can create opportunity for growth, fulfillment and greater meaning. Counselling services can range from short-term solution focus treatment to longer-term therapy/analysis. The treatment plan will depend on your individual needs, the preferred outcome, your ability/willingness to access services and ultimately, the best course of treatment for your unique situation.

My goal is to help you live a rich, full, meaningful life, which means learning coping skills for stressful situations, improving marriage, family, and other relationships beyond just surviving, but thriving.
When you feel all hope is lost, there is STILL hope! Vincent van Gogh said, “There may be a great fire in our soul, yet no one ever comes to warm himself at it, and the passers-by see only a wisp of smoke.” I consider my job to hear and feel with you the great fire of your soul—your struggles, feelings of hopelessness and worry, feeling controlled by your emotions and past trauma, repeating patterns of conflict, battling addiction, or fighting an inner battle that others may not fully understand or appreciate.

I work with families navigating transitions and life's challenges using a family systemes approach.
We all have our stories. Our past experiences shape the way we see ourselves and the world. Our conversations can help you understand these stories and offer the opportunity to rewrite old stories and craft new ones. You might wonder what makes these conversations with me different than ones you’ve had with friends and family. First off, the space and time is specifically designed for you. I can offer you a safe space where you will be encouraged to explore, with courage, how you see yourself, how you function in the world, and how you connect to others. Although this is hard work, we might even laugh along the way.

Are you struggling with personal or career demands, persistent negative belief systems or trauma (past or present)? The professions, pressures and adversity we all face are unique, but the common mental load of 'trying to do it all' crosses all demographics and employment sectors. Individual well-being, relationships, parenting, family dynamics and careers place intersecting demands that inevitably lead to overwhelm and burnout. Addressing underlying trauma themes and negative beliefs, while pragmatically navigating our numerous responsibilities will lead to a more peaceful and successful experience, personally or professionally.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
