I collaborate with you using talk therapy, humanistic, integrative, and expressive arts approaches where appropriate to support your path to wholeness.
Do you feel disconnected from yourself and those around you? Do you feel like there's more to life than what you're living? Busy schedules and daily routines make it difficult for us to get to know who we truly are and reconnect to the things that were once important. My work with clients often explores relationships, finding meaning and purpose, life transitions, femininity, overcoming anxiety, cultivating authentic self-expression, and developing intuition and confidence. I work with you to deepen your relationship with yourself and reconnect to what you desire most so you can reclaim your power and live a meaningful life.

Welcome adults and older teens who struggle to feel good enough. Do you feel disconnected from your authentic self, and like you need to please everyone else? Do you feel stuck in certain patterns of thinking or being? In a performance-driven world, our human needs for connection, identity and dignity are too often sacrificed. I invite you to engage in a therapeutic process that will center your humanity, and that will reconnect you to your emotions and your inherent wisdom. By paying attention to all the ways your body speaks to you, you can find the answers you seek. Every part of you is welcome and honoured here.

I believe most people can benefit from art therapy. There are many reasons someone might be interested in trying art therapy. Art therapy is a place to bring whatever needs voice and movement in the moment. One common intention for those seeking therapy is that they hope to feel/see change. The art making itself acts as tangible evidence for that change. We can literally see where we started, how far we have come and where we are currently.

You know what you want, but you're not sure how to get there. Or perhaps you're not sure what you want, but it sure as heck isn't this. Perhaps you feel stuck because of painful memories or negative beliefs about yourself. Or it's hard enjoy life because you feel anxious, worried, scared or sad much of the time. Ugh, I get it! Life is hard sometimes.

I use creative techniques for therapy, including psychodrama, play therapy, expressive arts and mindfulness.
I have worked with clients for over 30 years, and recently retired from the role of Clinical Director at a counselling agency to focus on a small private practice. I work in a relaxed atmosphere, out of my home, in the woods, which suits my counselling style well. Over the years I have worked with people with varying needs, including people who have experienced trauma, including childhood trauma, workplace trauma and war trauma. I work with individuals, couples, families and groups. I specialize in working with people who are willing to go beyond the surface to explore their own spiritual and personal growth.

Have you ever felt unseen, unsafe, or unwelcome in therapy? Like you don't belong there, or your therapist just doesn't get you? Your therapist should be one person with whom you don’t have to mask or hide parts of yourself. I welcome the weirdos, the outsiders, the black sheep. Those who are tired of having to over-explain or justify their existence, identities, or the way their brain works. You are welcome to just be yourself with me. Even if you don’t know who that is yet! What a treat to get to explore that together! See who you are beyond the weight of self-criticism and other's expectations. Become who you really want to be.

Expressive Arts Counsellors

What happens in expressive arts therapy?

In an expressive arts therapy session, the therapist will provide the space and materials necessary to encourage the client to express themselves creatively. These can include art supplies, musical instruments, a journal, a camera, and more. The therapist offers careful guidance throughout the creative process, often noticing and talking about psychological issues as they arise. Many clients also benefit from the mind-body connection—the physical act of making art can help them feel more grounded and present.

How long does expressive arts therapy take?

An expressive arts therapy session will typically last between 50 minutes and an hour. Group sessions may run longer. Sometimes, a client might only need one or two sessions of expressive arts therapy in conjunction with talk therapy to resolve a psychological issue. Others might find a fixed number of sessions over the course of either weeks or months to be beneficial. The duration depends on the client and their individual needs and goals for therapy.

How does expressive arts therapy help children?

Creativity is an important part of normal child development. Expressive arts therapy proves a safe outlet for child clients to learn to identify their emotions and express them in healthy ways. In expressive arts therapy, children can build their self-esteem, discover more about their personality and strengths, and feel a sense of normalcy in an otherwise chaotic world. This therapeutic approach can be particularly helpful for children with developmental disabilities, autism, ADHD, speech impairments, and other conditions.

What are the limitations of expressive arts therapy?

Sometimes individuals have physical limitations that can affect their ability to express themselves artistically in certain mediums. For example, someone with hearing problems might find it difficult to make music. Sickness and mobility issues can make some types of art physically inaccessible (e.g., sculpting, dancing, etc.). Sometimes, clients are overly skeptical and have trouble letting go and engaging with the creative process. Individuals who require a higher level of care may be better served with other types of therapy.
