I like to help clients with these issues: depression, anxiety, relationships, divorce, dating, loneliness, talking about childhood, and purpose.
You are wondering about getting counselling. You may feel anxious or depressed. It could feel like low mood, longing or sadness, or no feeling at all. You may struggle with an inner critic, which makes you feel on edge. However you describe it, something doesn’t feel quite right and it’s affecting your work or relationships. Or maybe some moments from the past are influencing you now, or are still fresh in your mind, stopping you from having the life you want to have.

I specialize in grief/loss, anxiety, depression, divorce, trauma and postpartum mental health.
Hello, my name is Ava and I provide counselling support for children, youth and women. I have had the privilege of working with clients who grapple with emotional difficulties rooted in familial dynamics and postpartum depression. I have a deep conviction in the power of transformation and that we all can overcome our issues with guidance, and self-love. The initial step of asking for support can be a challenging one, especially when experiencing depression, and anxiety. I, therefore, extend a warm ‘Hello’ to all those struggling to take that first step. I look forward to embarking on a healing journey with you.

My work focusses on mental health, childhood trauma (physical, sexual, emotional, medical), and relationships (intimacy, divorce, adoptions, parent-child).
In my varied practice, I see youth and adults, addressing issues ranging from mental health concerns to life transitions. I use a client-centred approach, respecting that you are the expert in your own life. The therapeutic relationship we create allows you to explore your reality to the extent that you want to, in a trusting, calm and gentle environment. I draw from a number of different therapeutic styles, suited to you as a person, your worldview and your interests (talk, art, sandtray, play). I practice from an anti-oppressive, inclusive perspective, and also provide clinical supervision for counsellors.

Vulnerability can make us feel very uncomfortable, but if we view it as a transition, into higher self-esteem/confidence & therefore more life resilience then it is much healthier to forge ahead to find a therapist who can support us. Finding the best fit in seeking a therapist is the most important step in relieving your stress. Many of us struggle with unhappiness, anxiety, depression, suicide ideation, sleep deprivation, separation, divorce, conflict resolution, trauma, relationship, and parenting issues, emotion regulation, communication and assertiveness, boundaries, personal development, caregiver burden and so much more

Every person has inherent strengths, abilities, and knowledge; however, when life gets challenging, we could all use a non-judgmental guide to partner with, to find goal-oriented solutions. I have extensive experience helping adults who are struggling with heartbreak (separation/divorce), lower mood, feeling anxious and/or using substances more than they would like, combined with a passion for working with neurodiversity and people with disabilities or life changing diagnoses. I value working with those who served in the military or emergency services including police, fire, and ambulance.

My areas of passion are working with 2SLGBTQIA clients, alternative sexual/romantic relationship identities & dynamics (ex. ethically non-monogamy, polyamory, kink, swinging, BDSM, open relationships, sex work, etc.), sex & intimacy, consent & boundaries, religious trauma, chronic pain/illness, neurodiversity, and life transitions. I draw from both education and lived experience to provide deeper insight into supporting you from an open-minded, trauma-informed, sex-positive, and affirming framework. The journey of healing and growth can be messy, challenging, and heart-breaking while also beautifully majestic and worth every effort.

No matter what you are struggling with, remember that on the other side of this difficult time will be increased wisdom, the exciting potential of a better you and more of what you want. We all have a survivor inside of us, an innate ability to overcome even the most difficult of challenges. Talking to someone can help you harness the strength that lives inside you. That is the essence of counselling.

Divorce Counsellors

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?

Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?

There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioural, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioural therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?

When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
