Together, we can explore fears in a safe space, name and shift painful thought patterns, and soothe hard-to-control thoughts, using DBT, CBT and Narrative approaches.
Do you wonder if you’re the only one around who experiences the world with the intensity you do? Depending on how stressed you are, it may feel like you’re on alert or like you’re living in a soundproof glass box, cut off from others. You may have a hard time focusing on conversations with co-workers and family. You might have been told you’re "oversensitive" or have "no filter.". You may be feeling frustrated with yourself for not being able to get things together and just move forward, but the pandemic has made everything harder, and it feels like there are always too many moving parts. You want for a space to talk this through.

I also incorporate principles of CBT, DBT and expressive arts therapies into my work.
While recovery is challenging, one of my greatest passions as a counsellor is helping clients develop tools to overcome disordered eating. My approach is compassionate and collaborative, using ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) in sessions. Everyone's journey is different, and so I tailor my work to each individual to help you reach your recovery goals. Having worked as a therapist at multiple eating disorder treatment programs (including treating ARFID), I apply this expertise into my work. I also incorporate body liberation and Health at Every Size in working with clients.

Hi there! My name is Ana, I'm a Registered Counsellor, and my life's purpose is to help people heal and grow. Do you struggle with anxiety, grief, a challenging relationship, low self-worth, that affects your day-to-day life and relationships? Do you feel overwhelmed, frustrated, angry or flooded with emotions, by just getting through the day, and feeling stuck on autopilot? Do you hope that your life, relationships with others and yourself could be better? Now more than ever, people are feeling anxious and uncertain about not knowing who they are, overcoming a breakup, working through a loss, or finding their place in life.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Counsellors

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behaviour and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behaviour, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioural change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behaviour; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
