I am a Registered Psychotherapist who helps people who are struggling with feelings of guilt, shame, and depression. Many of these are common symptoms for people who struggle with mental health conditions. Understanding the barriers in a person’s life, and previous trauma, can help identify present day triggers and daily struggles. The goal of therapy would be to work collaboratively, using a psychotherapy framework, to identify the cause of the struggles and work towards understanding and reducing symptoms affecting your daily life.

The mental health professionals at The Dot are trained in many different types of therapy that can help with issues related to trauma, grief, relationship issues (yes we do couples counselling) depression, anxiety and more.
It's not just you, life HAS gotten harder in the last few years. If you've been powering through, staying strong and carrying on, but now you're barely getting by and you're tired of feeling like you're not really living your life, it might be time for outside support. The benefit of therapy is that it's a time where you get to focus on yourself, to look at your life, and to get an outside perspective on how it could be different. You don't have to just endure, with the right support, you can heal from the past, and move forward towards a better future.

Whether you are struggling with trauma, depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties or other mental health challenges we will work together to begin your healing journey to wellness and living the life you hope for.
Hi I'm Kathy! I am of Algonquin Anishinaabe and English European heritage. I am a proud member of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation. Like many Anishinaabe people, I come from a family of story tellers. Whether we were sitting around the kitchen table or the campfire, stories were the way we understood where we came from and how we knew where we belonged in the world. As I got older, I began to wonder about the stories that weren’t told. The stories that were too painful to share. Becoming a therapist has allowed me to create a safe space to explore, understand, and give voice to our most painful stories.

Self-compassion is the first step when learning to cope with anxiety & depression.
You work hard to make relationships work, work hard at your job, you try your best to ensure everyone else around you is happy but end up losing yourself amid this. Even though you feel isolated, unheard, unseen you keep going. You want to stand up for yourself but don’t know how to. At times you feel overwhelmed with emotions thus feeling lost, helpless and anxious. You wonder why you connect to people a certain way and wish you could have healthier/sustainable relationships, wish you could cope better in difficult situations/be in charge of the way you express your feelings.

Life has its ups and downs and sometimes gets really challenging. So often we tell ourselves we can handle it, that things will get better, that it's not that bad, or that other people have it worse. Maybe we’ll fix it by doing more, giving more, pleasing others more. Everyone has their unique reasons to seek counselling. Often, it's for gaining support with a current challenge or life transition. Or, for support around long-standing unhelpful patterns and difficulties from the past. For adult women from their 20’s through midlife and into their elder years.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
