When people ask me about my "model of therapy," I usually say that I focus on two things: Brains and Relationships :) This method is founded on my belief that brains develop and create unique patterns of behaviour, and relationships influence functioning. I want to understand what may be happening in someone's brain when they are experiencing adverse symptoms. More specifically, what unhealthy patterns in the brain are causing this distress - then within the therapeutic relationship - work to shift this pattern, restructure the brain, and create healthier coping mechanisms.
While my 20 years of practice and experience are quite varied, I’ve always had a strong emphasis on working with young adults. I also work with adults more broadly, offer parent coaching, and support individuals experiencing anxiety-based concerns. More recently, my work has shifted toward giving back to the profession through supervision and consultation.
I believe healing and growth are most likely to occur with the combination of positive, emotionally attuned relationships and an understanding of how the brain interprets new information. Our brains heal in relationship to others. I always work from this premise and pride myself on building an easy, powerful therapeutic relationship with my clients.
