***ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS: IN-PERSON & PHONE/VIDEO*** We believe that there is good in every person, and hope in every situation. We have helped individuals, couples, and families heal, grow, and connect. As relational therapists, we appreciate the impact that our relationships have on our well-being. We do not see clients as having something wrong with their minds that necessarily needs to be fixed. Rather, we see our clients as unique individuals, each with their own stories and perspectives, embedded in important relationships and contexts that impact them. We see strengths and we see hope, even when it feels like there is none.

My main training is in Expressive Arts Therapy, which means that visual arts, theatre, music, poetry, and/or movement work can be part of your therapeutic process if you wish.
Finding the right therapist can be time-consuming, emotionally exhausting and expensive. For this reason, I offer a complimentary full-length introductory session. I have experience with youth and adults navigating struggles with self-esteem, depression, early childhood or other trauma, disordered eating, relationship issues, anxiety, grief and loss, life transitions, gender & sexuality inquiry, and existential anxiety. Clients appreciate my precision, as well as my gentle but directive approach to therapy. Mindfulness and meditation inform my practice and I am available, if you wish, to support you to explore this part of yourself.

Through experimenting together with visual art, sound, voice, movement, writing, storytelling, and other art forms, we can access our rich creative resources, support our somatic aliveness, and reshape our patterns of (dis)connection.
Hi there! I'm Kayla. I'm a psychotherapist who helps folks transform trauma and deepen experiences of presence and connection. My practice uses an experiential approach drawn from somatic, expressive arts, and relational psychotherapies. I am passionate about this work because I believe fully in our embodied potential for reshaping trauma through creative connection. Within my own life, and throughout my career I have witnessed how attending to our bodies through the arts can open up space for co-creating safe-enough and vibrant relationships.

Expressive arts uses all the arts (movement, voice, visual arts, poetry, etc.
In my private practice as an expressive arts therapist I use the arts along with conversation and reflection, to help clients get ‘unstuck,’ uncover resources for change and growth, live with suffering when necessary and celebrate the joy of life as we humans always have -- by making meaning through making art. Increasingly, I also draw on Internal Family Systems (working with our "parts") to support and inform a safe and effective healing environment. I work with clients suffering from anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues, creative blocks, eating disorders, physical illness, grief, trauma and sexual abuse.

We play with physical movement, metaphor and creative exercises (no art or performance experience needed).
Your relationships can be an incredible source of pleasure and connection, AND they can be the biggest source of tension and exhaustion. You might feel rigid and uncreative, or be falling into people-pleasing habits. You may feel overwhelming physical sensations of constriction, pain or numbness. You play a vast range of roles in your friendships, romantic & intimate dynamics, and at work. This can be a lot to handle, and you may be masking your authentic self. Creative arts therapy can offer new ways to find playfulness so you can relax into intimacy in your relationships, your body, and fully own the stories that shape you.

Today, I’m a Registered Psychotherapist (Q) and Dance/Movement Psychotherapist (Q).
Years ago, at a health consultation, I was asked a trauma related question that caused me to reflect on the connection of the mind and body. It completely confounded me yet, it stayed with me. As soon as I returned home I opened my laptop and began to research trauma and the body. And, what I found led to my realization of the significance of an embodied approach to healing. It also began my journey into the field of psychotherapy.

Dance Movement Therapy Counsellors

What can I expect from dance/movement therapy?

During dance therapy, the therapist will guide the client through dance movements that metaphorically represent a particular challenge, reflect their internal emotional state, or otherwise express physically what is happening for the client mentally. The therapist may “mirror” the client’s movements or simply observe. The client may be encouraged, as they dance, to pay attention to their breath or other physical sensations. Afterward, the therapist and client will often debrief to help the client process the experience.

Is dance/movement therapy evidence-based?

A small body of research has found that dance therapy can help treat conditions like depression, PTSD, anxiety, and eating disorders, as well as nonclinical issues like low self-esteem or family conflict. However, some experts caution that the evidence in favor of dance therapy is not as robust as that of other, more established therapies, and some of the published research is of low quality. Many recommend that dance therapy be used as a complementary rather than stand-alone treatment.

Can dance therapy help with depression?

Some research suggests that dance/movement therapy can aid in the treatment of depression, especially when combined with other therapies; some studies, for example, report that dance therapy combined with antidepressants or talk therapy is more effective than those treatments alone. The positive effects of dance therapy may come from the movement itself, as it’s well-known that physical activity can improve mood and bolster motivation in those struggling with depression.

What are the limitations of dance therapy?

People with disabilities or other conditions that hinder movement may find it more challenging to participate in dance therapy, though a well-trained therapist will take a client’s physical limitations into account when designing a treatment plan. Experts also warn that certain conditions, particularly eating disorders, should never be treated with dance therapy alone; it may, however, be used as an adjunct therapy.
