If you're having trouble expressing your emotions, maintaining healthy relationships, or moving on from a past experience, then I want to offer you some extra support. The past two years have been especially taxing for all of us, leaving many of us feeling stalled in our previous trajectories, and perhaps struggling to navigate the financial, emotional, and mental challenges that have emerged. This can make it feel like reaching your potential is less achievable. I use a culturally sensitive, collaborative, and client-centered approach to therapy that seeks to establish an environment of stability, trust, safety, and non-judgement.

Using a holistic and person-centered approach, I aim to provide therapy through a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive lens to ensure that my clients feel safe and included.
Do you feel overwhelmed or weighed down by your emotions? Are you struggling to connect with others and yourself? Do you need help healing from past trauma? I am here to listen. Together we will explore the challenges you are facing and identify and manage the symptoms you are experiencing. As a therapist, I strive to provide a safe place for all people that promotes growth and self love, and I am here to remind you that you are a priority. As a South Asian therapist, I recognize and value the vulnerability and strength that it takes to reach out for support, especially with the stigma that surrounds mental health.

Working in different Canadian settings has made me a culturally sensitive therapist who understands the client’s background, ethnicity, and belief system.
When we avoid what we need to face, we suffer the symptoms that bring us to therapy. We are wired to bear the pain of real life, but our psychological suffering can be unboreable. Sigmund Freud called psychotherapy “a cure through love” and I truly believe in this. The wounds that accrued in a relationship must be healed in a relationship. A relationship where the therapist doesn’t talk “at us” but “with us.” I believe all individuals can develop into mature, fully realized adults. However, inner or outer obstacles can make this path difficult. My role has always been to support my clients to remove these obstacles.

With openness and a culturally sensitive lens, I warmly invite you to share and re-author your story.
As a child of immigrants, you may feel responsible for everyone else. Expressing yourself, managing feelings of guilt, and honouring your needs feels hard when you’re used to putting everyone first. You constantly strive to prove your worth under familial and sociocultural pressures, yet it never feels enough. You want to break the cycle of intergenerational trauma that impacts your relationships with others and yourself. At the same time, you want to respect your roots as you free yourself from limiting beliefs, rediscover your voice, and embrace who you truly are. With lived experience, this is where I can walk alongside you.

Culturally Sensitive Counsellors
How does culturally sensitive therapy work?
A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.
How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?
Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?
While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.
Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?
Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
