I am a psychologist in supervised practice specialized in the practices of clinical neuropsychology, clinical psychology, and rehabilitation psychology with adults. Like many Canadians, I come from a bicultural upbringing. For this reason, I am aware of the unique challenges and intergenerational experiences that are faced everyday by those of us who grew up in both mainstream Canadian and multicultural communities. Drawing from my training as a psychologist, as well as my personal journey, my goal is to create an authentic, relatable, and culturally sensitive space for you to share your experiences through the course of therapy.

My own lived experience as a survivor of intergenerational trauma informs my work, and my approach is based in a wholistic, trauma-informed, embodied, anti-oppressive, culturally sensitive, integrated, and strength-based perspective.
I offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapy, and other embodied somatic practices, that tap into the body's and mind’s innate ability to begin healing from past traumas, overwhelming emotions, fears, distressing thoughts and experiences, helping you overcome the negative impact this has on your life. You need to be provided with support, a sense of safety, connection and a compassionate space to do that, and I will work with you to foster and help create that space for healing.

I use a culturally sensitive approach to support you in your healing.
How do you heal the ache you feel inside? If you are feeling in a funk, engaging in therapy can help you find clarity and get you moving. You are resilient and strong! You ARE navigating your mental state, relationships, and the systems you live in. However, the challenges of life may seem overwhelming. You may feel like you are on autopilot. You want to become the best version of yourself - but you find it difficult to begin. I believe you hold the ability to CHANGE your LIFE. And change may bring new challenges. It is okay to not do it alone.

I approach therapy with the belief that everyone has a life story that is worthy of being met with compassion and empathy. My work background, combined with my identities as a member of the Asian and LGBTQIA+ community equips me to work from a strength-based, trauma-informed, and anti-oppression framework. Additionally, this intersectionality assists me in maintaining a culturally sensitive and intersectional lens that is rooted in compassion and curiosity.

I value culturally sensitive, anti-oppressive, accessible therapy; and I endeavour to bring empathy, authenticity, insight, and calm into the therapy room and clients’ lives.
To suffer is human – but to grow and heal is also human. In life, you might experience stress, anxiety, self-criticism, anger, difficult transitions or relationships, chronic pain/health issues, trauma, sleep disturbance, and other challenges. Sometimes, you might feel so stuck or overwhelmed that your usual coping tools are not quite enough. It can be helpful to seek support from a professional who empowers you to overcome life’s challenges by helping you tap into your inner resources and develop new ones. I am a therapist with several years of experience offering such support.

My approach is culturally sensitive and consists of championing your strengths and moving you towards an increased sense of growth, meaning, and well-being.
It's undeniable that life is hard. It's filled with difficulties that we don't always know how to navigate and that make us feel stuck. Another undeniable truth is that there's help + support along the way, and it's possible to feel unstuck. I view therapy as a journey helping you find healing and solutions to your struggles within yourself. My mission as a therapist is to help Black and racialized people navigate life's challenges and uncertainties with more understanding, acceptance, flexibility, and resilience—whether you're dealing with family, romantic relationships, work/school, friendships, or your relationship with yourself.

Culturally Sensitive Counsellors

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
