We are a team of clinicians that are trained to work with students, individuals, couples and families. That excel at helping you expand your emotional tolerance, reactions & communication skills. Too many of us suffer in silence with anxiety, low self-esteem, unprocessed trauma and anger. You are not alone and we are here to encourage you to let those experiences be felt in a safe & non-judgmental environment. We know how hard it can be for most people to do therapy & our goal is to make it engaging, insightful & rewarding. To be vulnerable means not having our deepest feelings and secrets shot down. We use an integrative approach.

My work is in supporting people to improve and strengthen their relationships with others, and who are willing and interested to begin with nurturing their relationship with their own dear self. I support in parenting, step-parenting, not-parenting, care for self and others, feeling and knowing from emotions, building confidence, and journeying through grief and loss. I also work with people who are exploring their sense of belonging and well-being in the context of their relationship to colonization. I recognize that this is a long path, deeply benefited by being grounded in relationship. Also offering CBT-I for better sleep.

People who have historically benefitted from therapy with Hiu are in racialized bodies, have experienced/live with intergenerational trauma, are interested in forming a different relationship with their boundaries, and/or work in healthcare (doctors and medical students have reported meaningful therapeutic & consultative work with Hiu).
Hiu is experienced in working from an Intersectionality-focused lens with predominantly people of the Global Majority with different neurotypes who identify as queer and have ongoing relationships with grief. Trained in Somatic Attachment and Feminist Narrative Therapy, Hiu privileges a person’s survival story and relationships to their agency, emotions, boundaries, and people. Hiu takes on a co-researcher role in therapy sessions with deconstructive conversations, insightful and possibly challenging questions, curiosity, and a commitment to naming the oppressive systems and dominant narratives at work.

Change starts with the relationship that we form in the therapy and then continues by building useful skills in and outside of our sessions. In practice this means that I fit best with clients who are interested in (1) understanding more about their thoughts and emotions while also (2) taking clear steps to improve their mental and physical well-being. My job as the therapist is to provide a warm and caring environment to support the client in this process.

Therapy can help people better understand themselves and find greater meaning in their lives. People enter therapy for a wide range of reasons, often involving difficulty solving a problem in their lives on their own. Some people, for example, are having difficulty in a romantic relationship and wonder how to improve the relationship, or end it. Other people experience conflict or anxiety in a wide range of interpersonal relationships and enter therapy as a means of improving their communication skills and the quality of their relationships. I help people in both monogamous and polyamorous relationships.

I believe that psychotherapy in essence is a collaborative process that aims to increase psychological well-being and reduce emotional pain, loneliness and languishing which are ever present in today's world. At the heart of this process, is the positive healing relationship that develops between an individual, a couple or a family, and the therapist. I offer clients a non-judgemental, empathic and queer affirmative space where they learn to identify and tolerate their emotions, articulate appropriately their needs to significant people in their life and work on breaking away from toxic negative cycles.

I work with both individuals and couples who are struggling emotionally.
My therapeutic approach is psychoanalytic. When the mind is in conflict with itself it can lead to symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and self defeating behaviours. By making sense of the unconscious mind and its conflicts, one can begin to heal from past experiences, improve current relationships and develop a more fulfilling relationship with oneself.

I help neurodivergent, queer, immigrant, and minority clients build their self esteem and cultivate meaningful relationships. I also support students and working professionals with career transitions and stress management. Poor boundaries, people pleasing, and relationship anxiety can come about when you consistently receive the message that your needs are not as important as somebody else's. Although masking your genuine self may have aided you through difficult times, losing touch with who you really are will only bring you farther from what you actually want and need.

Couples Counselling

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
