Hi, I’m Grace. If you’re reading this, I imagine that there’s something in your life that you wish you could change. Whatever it is, I’m here to help. I provide a safe space for you to share your story. I know that many of our stories are full of hardships. Sometimes it can be difficult to see “the good” within ourselves, others and the world. But I promise you, it’s there. Each one of us has a unique set of strengths that we can use to foster resilience. I take a mindfulness-based approach to counselling, which means that I want to help you face challenges with confidence and acceptance.

Too often, we suffer alone with stress, anxiety, strained relationships, compulsive behaviour, depression, loneliness and a host of other issues. While it can be so easy to feel isolated with these problems, talking to an objective, trained, support person can build hope and create a path towards improvement. I integrate therapeutic modalities in my work; I prioritize a strong client-therapist relationship, focus on client goals and offer a variety of practical resources, tools and techniques.

I have extensive experience practicing clinical psychology with teens, adults and couples. When patients are open to examining the issues in their experience of unhappiness and worry - a positive outcome is within sight. The first step is to recognize the issues by name and begin exploring them. It requires openness and a non-judgemental attitude of curiosity. It means being kind, patient and compassionate towards one's self as the difficult issues are discussed. It also entails trusting the therapist as a fellow traveller in the process as one who is able to help clarify the emotional terrain and work towards a solution.

I support clients to put themselves first. As a professional, you face multiple pressures, often at work and at home. At times, these stressors can be crippling. This can lead to physical and mental illness, affect personal relationships, stunt your career growth, and distract attention away from the things that truly matter to you. My job is to provide a calm space where you can be unfiltered and unjudged, as you tackle the chaos of your life.

You’re feeling stuck in your current career, maybe even burnt out. Every workday, it’s harder to get out of bed. You long for something more and can almost hear a little voice inside you whispering that you deserve it. You’ve tried changing jobs but still feel like a square peg in a round hole. The idea of change feels overwhelming, partly because you overthink and lose sight of how you really feel. You long for a job where your strengths will shine and you can live up to your potential, but you aren’t sure if there’s a job like that out there for you. You have a nagging worry that you will never find a place where you belong.

If you are someone who is struggling with life's challenges, there are ways to help you cope and manage, and make life rewarding, and worth living. Sometimes it may feel easier to turn to unhealthy or even harmful ways of coping, but there are other options. "You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf." - Jon Kabat-Zinn

I have been a social worker for over a decade. I enjoy helping adults, parents and youth to enjoy more connection in their relationships, to experience more emotional regulation and less depression and anxiety, and to live their best lives. I’m trained in attachment focused family therapy, trauma treatment, DDP, EMDR, CBT and other modalities. I believe that therapy works best when you feel emotionally safe and accepted for all of who you are. This frees us to share our true thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment, and thus to feel less alone and be able to explore our mind and life in connection with another.

Therapy space often starts as a brave space, because of your decision to entrust your story with a stranger, in this case, me :). My responsibility as your therapist is to turn the brave space into a safe space for every part of you. I often think about the therapy as the process of putting together puzzles that don’t come with the original image. My role as your therapist is to accompany you to explore each piece with curiosity and acceptance, so that you can make sense of your pieces and construct images that feel authentic to you.

My specialty is focus. One of my strengths is my ability to listen to your words and truly hear what you have to say. I am also a creative (out of the box) thinker and have over 20 years of professional and personal experience in mental health. I will pull from many traditional modalities of healing/therapy to uniquely serve your needs on your terms.

Starting therapy can feel foreign. Providing a space to explore, challenge and sometimes sit with different emotions, memories, and feelings can help understand our connectivity to our internal and external world, and process difficult and challenging obstacles. I create a compassionate, open, and empowering space while you explore past, present and/or future obstacles and issues. I can help with: anxiety, depression, trauma/complex PTSD/PTSD, bereavement, self-esteem, depersonalization, communication, family conflict, and general life stressors. Ultimately, one of the key goals is to feel a stronger connection to yourself.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.
Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?
Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.
Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
