Are you unable to find joy and happiness in your hobbies anymore? Do you think to yourself that no one understands your pain and your suffering? Chronic illness and chronic pain are not easy to handle. The struggle of figuring out what actions are worth your time seems like a blur but you know you want to 'LIVE' once more and not just survive. You want to have meaningful relationships and enjoy the activities you love once more. I work with individuals who no longer want to be held back by their physical and their mental health.

These include depression, anxiety, social phobia, health anxiety, chronic illness, trauma (childhood and recent), grief, anger, stress, burn out, relationship issues, and loss of identity.
Life can be confusing, frustrating, lonely, and painful. You may find yourself struggling with shame, fearfulness, sadness, anger, or even numbness - maybe it all snuck up on you, or maybe it came crashing down after a traumatic or hurtful event. If you're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, and without direction, finding a supportive, knowledgeable and safe psychologist is a great first step. In your search for one, I am happy to answer any questions you have while looking for a good fit.

Life isn't always easy and it doesn't always give us what we expect. We can find ourselves consumed with worry and spiraling thoughts or feeling so low and unmotivated, even getting out of bed seems tough. We can reel from the mental load and exhaustion that comes with chronic pain or chronic illness and feel overwhelmed or burdened with grief and loss or life transitions. We can be hard on ourselves and sometimes struggle to meet our goals. Things might feel hopeless - like they'll never get better. But you don't have to travel these roads alone.

I work with children from the ages of 4 and up and work with adults, with specializations around the various forms of trauma, chronic illness, and mental health.
As a counselor I recognize my privilege and am honored to be a part of your journey. Working with me means that I see you as the expert of your lived experiences. At the end of the day we are all unique in our wants, needs, and desires, and what works for some does not mean it will always work for everyone. My aim is to work with you and meet you where you are at so we can figure out what is working, what needs to change, and how we can get there together. After all, this is YOUR journey. Counselling with me is a collaborative process where your voice, opinions, and experiences matter, are important, and are valid.

Are you finding it difficult to cope with your own or a loved one’s cancer diagnosis? Although everyone’s experience of cancer is unique, several themes stand out when I reflect on the concerns clients commonly share with me: Many people are having difficulty living with the unknowns. Others share about sadness or a sense of loss of control. Almost all clients talk about the challenge of dealing with fear or worry about the future. If any of these kinds of experiences resonate with you, I invite you to reach out to me. Our work together cannot take away the diagnosis, but I can help you feel better able to cope with the experience.

Sometimes our mind and body aren't in sync and can leave us feeling ill or debilitated. I strongly believe they are connected and believe that psychotherapy can be leveraged to improve their relationship for better overall health and improved quality of life. Our sessions will focus on understanding your chronic health issues, how they impact your life, and how to better manage them. It is my hope that you are an active participant in your care. For some people, their health issues have taken on a life of their own. Control is a theme of our work. Even as issues continue to happen, you can feel more empowered around your response.

Hello and welcome to you! Please contact me if you are seeking quality individual or couples psychotherapy. Healing begins when you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and relationship patterns without shame or judgment. We'll start with detailed assessment of your history, personality, abilities, and relationships. Next we develop a treatment plan for your unique situation. If you are willing to be open-minded, courageous and committed to learning, we can make positive changes. Good therapy will likely decrease your symptoms, AND also increase your confidence and skills, bring balance to relationships, and foster self-acceptance.

I am accepting new individual clients in my virtual-only practice. My couples and family spots are full. - Are you feeling down, worried, stressed, in a slump, checked out, overwhelmed, frozen, on high alert, or “ready to fight?” If you’re going through trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, sickness, relationship problems, parenting, or something else, life is probably really tough. We can’t always change our circumstances, but we can do a lot together to get you feeling like you again. If you appreciate a direct approach when needed, with space for joking, and you want to work together on goals, you might just be in the right place.

Chronic Illness Counsellors

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
