Sometimes our mind and body aren't in sync and can leave us feeling ill or debilitated. I strongly believe they are connected and believe that psychotherapy can be leveraged to improve their relationship for better overall health and improved quality of life. Our sessions will focus on understanding your chronic health issues, how they impact your life, and how to better manage them. It is my hope that you are an active participant in your care. For some people, their health issues have taken on a life of their own. Control is a theme of our work. Even as issues continue to happen, you can feel more empowered around your response.

I strive to create a safe space for my clients to explore their concerns with compassion and acceptance. My goal is to make you feel supported, to validate your experiences and to provide information and skills to help you meet your goals in a way that is realistic and manageable. Everyone learns and processes differently, so I use a variety of therapeutic modalities. Depending on your hopes for therapy, we will develop a plan that is unique to you and may draw from various approaches.

As a PhD provisionally registered psychologist with specialized training in evidence-based treatments for insomnia, I believe good sleep is the foundation for good mental health. I work with individuals to improve their sleep by addressing the root cognitive and behavioural causes of insomnia, such as reducing anxiety, depression, or doing “too much of a good thing” that interferes with sleep (e.g. addiction to nicotine, alcohol, or cannabis, or other impulsive/compulsive behaviours such as too much internet or social media use, pornography, binge eating, video games, or gambling).

Life is challenging and difficult at times. It can create distress that affects every part of who we are: our thoughts, feelings, physical well-being and spirit, upsetting our ability to be effective with ourselves, others and manage the demands of our daily life. When we decide to reach out for help, we are acting courageously. Particularly if we do not have the energy or believe that things can be better. I am passionate about helping people. I work to understand the world from your point of view and help you gain a sense of balance and confidence to make positive changes in your life.

I specialize in helping people who experience depression, anxiety, low self-confidence, and painful feelings in current or past significant relationships. My work involves assisting people to make sense of their emotional reactions and supporting them to use this information to make wise decisions for their life. At other times, I help people alleviate their painful emotions by using techniques that change unhelpful emotion states to more invigorating emotion states. I believe in practicing as a culturally competent therapist, striving to be knowledgeable, open and respectful of the cultural beliefs and practices of all people.

I help clients shift from just surviving into thriving; realigning with who and how they want to be instead of being hijacked by outdated narratives as a result of past experiences. My focus is on creating safe trauma-informed spaces and inspiring a compassionate curiosity about "who am I?" "How did I get to this point?" "What else might be possible?". I have always been fascinated with how our experiences shape us and how we may discover meaning and inspiration. During this quest I have worked as a strength & conditioning coach, yoga teacher, and counsellor and these experiences have uniquely shaped how I show up as a therapist.

I work with anxiety, addiction (substance use) and chronic pain. Sometimes the little things become too much and you find you're overreacting or panicking. Maybe you can't get a situation out of your head and you're overthinking or stressed about it. Maybe you tired of numbing the pain or avoiding your problems cause it isn't helping. Sometimes our motivation is to stop passing on unhealthy patterns to our kids. Maybe you want to control your emotions so they don't control you. If you want to work on the roots of addiction and the stress and anxiety that is always brewing below the surface of chronic pain, we could be a fit.

Many people feel lost in the rhythms and uncertainties of life. Feelings of emptiness, loneliness, hurt, confusion and anxiety can overwhelm our ability to live life deeply. Sometimes our usual patterns of living are no longer working. Other times sudden changes, such as world events, a loss, life transition, trauma, or a diagnosis swamp our emotional resources. The surfacing of past events such as abuse, grief, or accidents may stop us in our tracks. These are just some of the situations that can create barriers to living the life we want, and send us searching for deeper meaning, connection and belonging.

Working with people; to support them, to listen, to talk, to improve mental health has always been my passion. I believe as individuals we have greater strength and ability than we often give ourselves credit for. Situations can come up that are too overwhelming, confusing, or difficult to even know where to start. It is universal that we all experience challenges and may need to seek support. It takes immense courage to reach out for support and begin to build trust with a therapist. I want to honour this in my practice by providing a safe, non-judgemental space for clients.

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
