Being alive means that we will experience pain, crave meaning, and eventually, confront death. It is normal, and even necessary, to experience anxiety in response. The question is whether this anxiety motivates us or paralyzes us. Problems arise when we are unable to feel a sense of agency in our lives; and it is through increased awareness that we can become better equipped to build the kind of life we want to lead and flourish into the kind of people we want to be. I work best with clients who want to be their most authentic selves, and are willing to dig deep to heal their past and create a better future for themselves.

Life can sometimes darken our hearts and make things feel difficult or even hopeless, as if there is no way out. You may battle with anxiety, depression, perfectionism or low self-worth while a strong inner critic berates you every step of the way. Perhaps you feel pulled in different directions, while feeling as though you are losing control over your life - at a loss to know where to start in order to break the negative cycles you find yourself trapped in. Amidst all this, relationships may suffer, not only with others, but also with yourself as you strive to find who you really are amongst all the chatter and chaos of your mind.

Psychotherapy: Soul Tending Our suffering and symptoms (depression, anxiety, PTSD) are often expressions of our unmet, sometimes unconscious longings. Meeting our experiences with compassion can offer insight into what we are needing. I encourage people to share what is on their hearts and to notice what comes up when that sharing is held in a safe, nonjudgmental container. We'll often turn to the body to check in and notice where emotion is moving or stuck, where trauma or intuition are held. So much can move and transform when we have a trusted and confidential place to process our experiences and to speak our truths.

You expected becoming a parent to be hard, but you didn't expect to feel this anxious, overwhelmed, or unlike yourself. Maybe your mind won't stop racing, you're feeling burned out, you're experiencing intrusive thoughts, or you're wondering why everyone else seems to be coping better than you are. Perhaps you're pregnant after a loss, recovering from a difficult birth, navigating your fertility journey, or finding that old wounds are resurfacing. Whatever you're carrying, you don't have to hide it here. You deserve support, not judgment.

For over 20 years, I’ve worked with issues such as anxiety, depression, anger originating often from childhood that often seeps into today’s relationships and reality. Therapy is about creating the life we truly want to live. This can be especially difficult in today’s chaotic society. In childhood we absorb various message from family and society, and. develop coping strategies to protect us from criticism or judgment, but over time, they can turn into beliefs that end up limiting us. Together, we’ll gently uncover and untangle these patterns, making space for new perspectives and healthier ways of being.

FAQ - About Jewish Counselling
What can a Jewish therapist help with?
Jewish therapists can usually help with the same range of mental health concerns as any qualified therapist, including anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, and relationship challenges. However, there are many reasons that someone who is Jewish might want to meet with a therapist who shares their background. For example, a Jewish therapist may have a deeper understanding of how faith, culture, traditions, or community expectations could affect a client’s mental health. This may make Jewish therapists better positioned to support concerns related to Jewish faith. A Jewish therapist may also understand how a Jewish client’s cultural upbringing can shape their identity. This may make them especially helpful for concerns related to identity, belonging, and religious or cultural questioning.

How does Jewish identity shape the therapy experience?
A therapist who understands Jewish beliefs, traditions, and cultural practices may be better able to recognize how spirituality, religion, family expectations, community life, holidays, or religious observance impact your life. This shared understanding can help you feel more comfortable and less burdened by the need to explain your background. It may also strengthen the therapeutic alliance, which refers to the working relationship between you and your therapist and is tied to positive therapy outcomes. At the same time, you and your therapist do not need to share the same faith or cultural background to work together effectively. Many therapists who are not Jewish can still provide culturally responsive care if they approach your beliefs, practices, and experiences with respect and humility, rather than making assumptions or dismissing the role of faith or culture.

Does Jewish therapy work across different backgrounds and levels of observance?
Yes, Jewish therapy can support you across a wide range of backgrounds, including Orthodox, Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist, and other Jewish communities. Some may want therapy to include explicit discussion of this religious observance, while others may simply want a therapist who understands their specific background and can use that context to better support conversations about mental health. Many therapists are willing to tailor their approach based on your preferences, and a good therapist should not assume that all Jewish clients have the same beliefs.

Can a Jewish therapist help with marriage and couples counselling?
Jewish therapy can include marriage counselling, couples counselling, and premarital counselling. For many couples, these sessions may include discussion of how Jewish values or cultural traditions may shape their relationship. Therapy may also be helpful when partners come from different Jewish backgrounds, are in an interfaith relationship, or have different expectations around marriage or family life. Depending on the couple’s preferences, a Jewish therapist may incorporate faith-informed practices alongside other evidence-based relationship tools, such as communication skills, emotional regulation strategies, and conflict-resolution techniques.

How might I inquire about a therapist's experience working with Jewish clients?
If faith or cultural background is important to you in therapy, it can be helpful to ask a prospective therapist whether they have experience working with Jewish clients. In initial conversations with potential therapists, you might ask questions such as, “Have you worked with Jewish clients before?” or “How do you approach conversations about faith in therapy?” As sessions begin, it can be helpful to notice how the therapist responds to your concerns. A good therapist should respond with respect, curiosity, and cultural humility. If you feel dismissed, misunderstood, or find yourself having to explain your beliefs or cultural context constantly, it may be worth considering another therapist.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Jewish therapists?
The directory of Jewish therapists includes therapists who have shared their faith background in their profiles or therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients or communities, regardless of their own background or religious affiliation. Not all therapists choose to disclose this information on their profile, and these individuals would not appear in search results for this reason.
