My practice is dedicated to supporting children ages 5 to 12 years of age who are experiencing difficulties associated with anxiety-related disorders and general anxious thoughts and feelings.
Through the use of CBT strategies, children learn to utilize coping skills to manage their specific challenge(s) in a more effective and healthy way, recognize and accept feelings and uncomfortable physical symptoms, and better understand what their thoughts and behaviours might be trying to communicate.

Located near Uvic, my practice continues to be working with children, youth and adults who are experiencing anxiety, ADHD, trauma and the behavioural outcomes that accompany these experiences.
Please feel welcome to bring younger/older siblings to the appointments. This creates accessibility for parents to counselling, cancelling the need for child care. We can talk while your children are occupied in the playroom and can help ease anxiety for kids attending for the first time.

I have 15 years of experience working with neurotypical and neurodiverse children and youth in the public school system as a special education teacher and school counsellor.
For youth and adults, my intention is to help clients work through psychological challenges by practicing acceptance, creating a sense of agency, and separating from extreme thoughts and emotions which can overrun our inner worlds. Using parts language, I teach clients how to harness self-acceptance and self-leadership as a foundation for personal growth.

In 20+ years of experience working with children & families, I have often contributed to change through an approach that emphasizes strengths and removes blame.
The concentration of my practice is working with families who are experiencing conflict, difficult emotions, and/or concerning behaviors. How should we react or respond? What can we do to help and support? How do we make sense of these big emotions and behaviors? I work with individuals and families through a systemic approach that strives to develop empathy and understanding and answer these important questions. The core of my practice explores safety and trust using an attachment lens. Through these explorations, I have been helpful in fostering significant growth within relationships and family units.

I specialize in helping children aged 0-12, along with their families. When kiddos experience trauma, their brains do their best to keep them safe, but this often results in behaviours and circumstances that are very challenging. I take a systems-level approach, speaking with family members, school teams, doctors, and whoever else I am given consent to collaborate with, so that all of us can be on the same page about interventions and strategies. If a child sees all of the adults in their world working together to care for them, they thrive. It takes a village to help a family. I hope you'll consider me for your village!

Her approaches are integrated and are based on Person-centred Theory, Attachment Theory, and Family Systemic Theory, and are merged with Emotion Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Play Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. May can speak fluent Cantonese and Mandarin. It is hoped that language is not a barrier in therapy for Chinese-speaking clients.

Child Counsellors
Child psychologists in British Columbia provide mental health therapy to children and are experts in child development.

Every comprehensive review of therapy with children shows that all credible approaches, when performed by a competent mental health clinician, produce almost the same results. About half of all kids will get better. Of those that improve, 80% will show progress in a relatively short time (likely in fewer than six sessions), the remaining 20% will need longer-term support.

The best child therapists in British Columbia build great relationships with the child and the parent. They also see the child's strengths and are open to hearing the child's possible solutions to the challenges the child faces. Finally, a good therapist appreciates the child's culture and is sensitive to the values of the child's community.
