Since words alone do not always tell the full picture, I use my additional training in Play Therapies, Art , Drama, and movement to help clients and myself see what the misunderstandings, pain, confusion, and grief are about.
Human beings are complicated- and so often we attempt to reach out to others using words to express our thoughts, our emotions, and our behaviours. With children/youth, we see additional communication barriers because of fewer words and limited life experiences. Being part of a family system should bring safety and emotional support to each family member, but sometimes the family, on its own, cannot do this. This is my work- we become partners in the process of change- discovering strengths, and building on them.

I help clients connect to a greater awareness of their experiences while releasing tension by using methods such as art -making, body movements, breath-work, creativity, experimentation, exploration and meditation.
I am committed to generating value for clients by focusing on their abilities, goals and strengths, as well as recognizing the importance of being flexible, accessible and collaborative. I focus on a person’s individual nature and encourage them to take more of a lead in therapy so that they can discover their own solutions and use their personal intuition to find wisdom, growth, healing and fulfillment within themselves. I offer a safe, non-judgmental and nurturing space for clients to express themselves and process difficult feelings, life transitions and daily struggles.

Hello, I'm Sarah, a registered art therapist - welcome! Art therapy is a versatile and connective approach that allows clients to gain mastery over their issues through expression and creation. Art therapy can meet the needs of those in search of more than a typical therapy session. It is uniquely suited to engage with inner creativity as well as make room for the things words can not always express. Traditional counselling techniques and approaches are incorporated with the art making process to create a well-rounded healing approach.

During our sessions play, sand tray, games and art may be used.
Challenges and unexpected events can overwhelm our sense and emotions. I strive to work with children, youth and families in an empathetic and client centered approach to help individuals and groups find hope and joy for the future. Children and youth who have experienced trauma may find it difficult to participate in traditional talk therapies. Rainbow of Hope uses a play therapeutic approach so clients can tell their stories and process their complex emotions. By learning how to tell their story they learn coping strategies that enables each client to see hope within their future.

As an art therapist, my role is to guide clients through the art making process, and the thoughts that may come up.
I work with primarily neurodivergent and/or queer people (of all ages, genders, identities) who want to pause, explore and reconnect. Societal expectations of how we should act and navigate the world can be exhausting. It can be hard to feel safe enough to reconnect with our inner selves, fearlessly use art materials, explore difficult topics, and live authentically. No art making experience needed. Everyone can make art .

I provide a holistic approach by interweaving talk therapy, art therapy , and somatic mindfulness-based practices to help reconnect your mind-body connection.
Are you struggling with body image issues, low self-esteem and self-worth, or anxiety? Do you feel like you are having an endless negative conversation with yourself? Caught between who you are and who you think we “should” be? You're not alone. Many of us have complicated relationships with our bodies and food. We can begin to feel “trapped” by our thoughts, which can take a toll on our minds and bodies. We can uncover your innate resources and empower your inner voice by compassionately shifting the focus to wellness, reframing towards body acceptance, healthy attitudes, and positive self-perceptions.

Aside from being a Therapist and Art Therapist, I’m a human, just like you, who loves to connect with others at a deep human level.
Perhaps, you’ve heard yourself say or wonder to yourself: • I’ve struggled with anxiety all my life. • I keep myself busy all the time, and I find it easy to keep my emotions at bay. • I have to walk on eggshells around my parent all the time. • I have so much built up anger. • I feel like everything is my fault. • I’m struggling in my relationship with my partner and I feel stuck. • I don’t know how to parent my child anymore. You are not alone if you find yourself feeling this way. These are common painful human experiences. The truth is that we are not meant to carry pain, and I want to help carry it with you.

As a clinical social work student and art therapist, I work with individuals and families using trauma-informed and culturally safe approaches that are tailored to your unique journey.
Between meeting the demands of daily life, navigating relationships, and traversing the expectations we place on ourselves, life can be overwhelming. At times we may struggle with feeling disconnected from self, others, and the things that matter to us - and feel uncertain about how to create a path through it all. In some deep way, we may sense that healing and growth is possible; but we know we cannot go it alone.

Play and expressive therapies integrate the use of verbal counselling with play, sand play, art therapy and are very experiential.
Is your child demonstrating challenging behaviours like social anxiety, school adjustments, verbal aggression or hitting and fighting, or having difficulty with peer or familial relationships? As a parent, are you trying to understand why this is happening? Children/youth sometimes demonstrate challenging behaviours due to a variety of reasons. With remarkable insight, compassion and commitment to working with children, Monica helps children/youth work through and manage identified issues and concerns and learn new coping strategies.

Unearth your self worth by prioritizing yourself through gentle and meaningful counselling explorations. It's not always easy to articulate the magnitude of what we are experiencing. Through my approach of talk therapy with an expressive arts lens, together, we will amplify the voice of your subconscious where your needs will rise above the surface and your healing can begin. I like to uphold the integrity behind the ancestral roots of art -making and celebrate how each creative process has the power to deepen the relationship to the intuitive self, activate the imagination, and present opportunity for recurring liberation.

Art Therapy Counsellors

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
