My clients are just like you - to the outsider they appear like they have it all together. But on the inside something feels stuck, or at least worth exploring. I believe we are all trying our best to navigate the journey of life with the only strategies we know. Sometimes those ways work well for us, and other times they don’t. I am passionate about issues surrounding parenting, life transitions, emotional intelligence, vocation and purpose, and coping mechanisms. I particularly enjoy being a listening ear for fellow dads who try everyday to be the best dad they can be.

People often make sense of their lives through stories. We tell stories about who we are, how we live, and how we fit in our relationships and our world. Sometimes the stories we tell about ourselves, leave us feeling angry, depressed, hopeless, incapable, unworthy or unlovable. Maybe somewhere along the line you've become 'an angry person,' or 'out of control.' Maybe your child lives with an 'Anxiety Gremlin' that feeds off their greatest worries and fears. Learning how and when these stories started, and how they influence our individual struggles, can be a big step in learning how to move forward.

I am aware of how social and structural systems affect our mood, capacity, self-esteem, and emotional and physical well-being. My approach is one of deep engagement and inclusion; I acknowledge differences in order to understand the complex challenges of navigating a world that can often be dehumanizing. I work with individuals struggling with anxiety, workplace stress, intrusive thoughts, and grief. If you are a couple challenged with poor communication, lack of trust and co-dependency, I provide strategies to improve relational breakdown and increase relationship satisfaction.

Please note: I am unable to take new clients at the moment. As a therapist who is as passionate about mental health as I am about the outdoors, ecotherapy is something I am excited to share with you. I'm an experienced counselor, trail guide and backcountry camper, and have facilitated outdoor experiences, including therapeutic journeying with youth and adults, for many years. My approach to therapy is trauma-informed, strengths-based, client-led, and is grounded in the ideologies of anti-oppressive practice and decolonizing.

It's not just you, life HAS gotten harder in the last few years. If you've been powering through, staying strong and carrying on, but now you're barely getting by and you're tired of feeling like you're not really living your life, it might be time for outside support. The benefit of therapy is that it's a time where you get to focus on yourself, to look at your life, and to get an outside perspective on how it could be different. You don't have to just endure, with the right support, you can heal from the past, and move forward towards a better future.

It is the normal experience of struggle and suffering that brings people to psychotherapy. You may feel that something in your life is not making sense or is not working. That may be a relationship, your reactions to life events, the past wounds of trauma that emerge, or other challenging experiences; it is all okay. Whatever it is that brings you in, I maintain that there is nothing “wrong” with you, that there is just something wrong for you. This perspective can seem completely foreign at first, however, it is the process of therapy that can shift the feeling of being “wrong” to an intuitive, felt sense that you are just right.

We all face challenges in life and sometimes we need help along the way. Painful experiences can leave us feeling disconnected, stuck in heavy emotions and struggling to change unhelpful patterns within ourselves and our relationships. You deserve to be heard, validated and understood, so that you can share your story and begin to heal. Healing and growth are possible, even after painful events. Together, we can make connections between the past and the present, build your self-compassion and find new ways of coping. I hope to support you as you gain new insights into yourself and discover a new way forward.

Mental health is nested within a network of relationships and our past experience. In therapy, we work together to untangle these networks to build awareness and form new and useful strategies that serve you and your loved ones. I work with youth and adults managing low mood/self-esteem, depression/suicide, anxiety, ADHD, eating and body image concerns, relationship difficulties (family, romantic etc.), grief, and day to day stressors.

There are times in our life when it feels like nothing we do makes a difference. Problems become complicated by issues associated with our struggles managing mood or anxiety, feelings of shame, or coping with grief and loss. Situations such as transitions related to life stages, conflict or loss of connection in significant relationships, or changes in mental well being can be distressing and overwhelming. I work hard to build collaborative alliances with clients to co-construct different narratives about our relationship with problems, and develop alternative personal stories of strength, growth and recovery.

I work primarily with empaths, highly sensitive souls and people who tend to take on the 'caretaker role'. I support people through anxiety, self-criticism, people pleasing, and difficulty putting themselves first. I help people understand and communicate their needs, boundaries and build stronger relationships with themselves and others.

Life has its ups and downs and sometimes gets really challenging. So often we tell ourselves we can handle it, that things will get better, that it's not that bad, or that other people have it worse. Maybe we’ll fix it by doing more, giving more, pleasing others more. Everyone has their unique reasons to seek counselling. Often, it's for gaining support with a current challenge or life transition. Or, for support around long-standing unhelpful patterns and difficulties from the past. For adult women from their 20’s through midlife and into their elder years.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
