I have experience working alongside adults and adolescents navigating a variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, stress, communication, boundaries, trauma-related issues, and grief.
Are you struggling to calm your mind? Do you have overwhelming feelings of sadness or hopelessness? Perhaps you are looking to understand how to navigate a mood disorder. Do you want more contentment in your life and relationships? These experiences are common for many of us, and an indicator that we need a safe and supportive space to navigate life and address our concerns. I strive to create a space that honours your inherent wisdom, skills and creativity as we explore your experience and hopes. My approach is relationally focused, strengths-based and rooted in anti-oppressive and trauma-informed frameworks.

Change starts with the relationship that we form in the therapy and then continues by building useful skills in and outside of our sessions. In practice this means that I fit best with clients who are interested in (1) understanding more about their thoughts and emotions while also (2) taking clear steps to improve their mental and physical well-being. My job as the therapist is to provide a warm and caring environment to support the client in this process.

Life is nothing short of amazing. It's amazing how much we can go through and live to tell about it. It's amazing how fast kids grow up and time flies, how angry a co-worker can make you, how much compassion we can seem to have for others when we struggle to offer any to ourselves. It's amazing how much we put on our plates when all we need is to rest. It's amazing how much we can long for understanding and connection and how much opportunity can be missed right in front of our eyes. It's amazing how short life is. It's also amazing how much we can learn in the time we have, and how little steps can amount to such massive change.

Did you wake up today and think to yourself, "something isn't right" or "I can't go on like this"? If you are struggling with your substance use and you're feeling like you are no longer in control, it might be time to consider change. Maybe you are tired of hiding your drinking as a way to cope with your mood. Maybe you have noticed that while getting high works in the moment to help manage your nerves, you are actually more anxious now than you have ever been. Change is scary, but may be necessary for you to reach your full potential.

I often say that I come to my work honestly. I know first hand how it feels to suffer deeply, not understanding how to make it better, and being surrounded by those who were as baffled by me as they were supportive. I am incredibly passionate and committed to working with individuals who are struggling with self harm, suicidal ideation, anxiety/mood disorders, emotion dysregulation and relationship challenges. Those who are wanting to live a better life and just don't know how to get there!

In my role as a mental health counsellor, some of the issues for which individuals seek help include depression, anxiety, self-esteem, grief and bereavement, chronic pain, stress management, and life transitions. I also have an very special interest in supporting individuals entering the menopause transition, from peri- to post-menopause. Helping individuals along this transition is very important as many health care providers are unable to spend the time with you to fully educate you on this transition - I have done the deep dive with this issue and I can help fill in the gaps and empower you to advocate for your health.

Adulting is tough at times; different life stages, different goals and opportunities. Much of our personal history influences how we approach challenges in life and how we interact with others. Family can be a source of support, or not. The same can be said about those who surround us; work, social and friend groups. I believe we have the tools within us to deal with what life throws at us. It may be a tweak or a subtle shift of thought that will make the difference, or it may take a while due to previous traumas.

I am happy to work with an extensive range of clients and organize my practice around providing Client-Centred Therapy grounded in empirically-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Additionally, I have lived experience as a first responder and am passionate about addressing the unique challenges associated with fulfilling such roles. In my experience working with people over the last 10 years, I've found that often their challenges are best addressed first and foremost by being heard; this act of listening is a gift that unlocks the resources hidden within.

Bipolar Disorder Counsellors

What is the most successful approach to treating bipolar disorder?

Living with bipolar disorder can be challenging, and a number of therapies have been found effective in providing support to patients as they gain the skills to understand and manage the disorder. Family-focused therapy is often helpful for children and teens (the majority of cases develop before age 19); it aims to minimize mood cycling by improving family communication and reducing conflict. It also helps young people navigate the developmental challenges the disorder can create. Cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) and variants such as Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)help patients manage the thoughts and feelings that influence bipolar mood swings as well as develop specific behavioral strategies to counteract them.

What happens in therapy for bipolar disorder?

Because the patterns of mood switching and its triggers differ for each person and can change over time, mood tracking or monitoring becomes a basic way patients learn about the nature of their condition. One of the most common features of therapy is finding a workable method of mood monitoring, in which patients track their daily activities and rate their moods, then use the findings to adjust routines accordingly. Patients learn ways of handling the many stresses that arise in life so that they do not trigger mood swings.

What kinds of problems does therapy help with?

Like many other mental health disorders, BPD is heavily influenced by stress; therapy provides skills for coping with stressors of all kinds. Therapy is extremely important for helping individuals identify the situations that may trigger mood switching, so that mood swings can be prevented. Therapy may especially target recognition of the early stages of mood change so that they can be managed. In addition, therapy helps patients deal with the significant amount of turbulence the disorder can create in relationships and in work life.

What is the goal of therapy for bipolar disorder?

Therapy helps patients set up their lives to maintain stability so that their mood isn’t constantly threatened by daily events. Perhaps the first task of therapy is to educate people about the nature of the disorder. At the same time, a primary goal of therapy is to enhance adherence to drug treatment. Extended periods of mood stability can prompt patients to discontinue medication, triggering relapse, while the early phases of manic episodes can feel so energizing that patients stop medication, ushering in full-blown mania and the altered self-perception that can lead to destructive behaviors. Another major goal of therapy is to understand one’s mood patterns so as to minimize both the frequency and intensity of mood cycling.
