Change starts with the relationship that we form in the therapy and then continues by building useful skills in and outside of our sessions. In practice this means that I fit best with clients who are interested in (1) understanding more about their thoughts and emotions while also (2) taking clear steps to improve their mental and physical well-being. My job as the therapist is to provide a warm and caring environment to support the client in this process.
My specialty is a blend of mindfulness, self-compassion, and cognitive-behavioral techniques. First, mindfulness builds awareness and acceptance of experience. Then, self-compassion soothes and brings a sense of warmth and comfort to all areas of life. Finally, cognitive and behavioral techniques are used to produce profound changes in thinking and behavior.
My process begins with a brief phone call to see if we're a good match. On the call we discuss what came up in the assessment, and I spend a little time describing my approach and why it might or might not work for you. Prior to the first session, you're sent a comprehensive online assessment that saves us time so we can get concrete tools sooner.

On September 25 2023, Dr. Armstrong will be running an online information session for the Mindful Self-Compassion and Emotional Awareness Group Program. Different from a meditation practice, this program teaches you to create a foundation of mindfulness and self-compassion so you can explore your own emotional landscape and learn strategies for managing difficult (or joyful!) emotions before, during and after they arise. This program is planned to last approximately 4 sessions(Oct 2-23, 2023) and will teach you to unlock your most troubling emotions. Contact us to learn more.
