It is my role as a registered clinical counsellor to create an environment of trust and confidence. Each individual has the quintessential need to connect with others, to explore his/her sense of self, and to understand their cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal reactions. I provide my clients the guidance to move toward this understanding. Together collaboratively, we work to remove the obstacles that are preventing forward movement towards a more positive fulfilling life. It is my goal, through therapy, to nurture and support my clients and to facilitate positive change.

My passion is to work with children and families to support them in having a better connection with each other and the environment they live in. I provide a fun, safe place for children to learn about their feelings, how their bodies work and how they can get the support they need. This can look like learning strategies they can use on their own, or with their parents support and having the language to express what they are feeling. Parenting is the most amazing and rewarding experience, yet it can also the most challenging. I provide parents with tools to be present, calm and understanding of what their child may need.

Human beings are complicated-so often we attempt to reach out to others using words to express our thoughts, our emotions, and our behaviours. With children/youth, we see additional communication barriers because of fewer words and limited life experiences. Being part of a family system should bring safety and emotional support but sometimes this is not possible without help. My work is to enable us to become partners in the process of change- discovering strengths, new awareness and building on this. Imagine my holding up a mirror for you, so that with each session, you are able to discover and appreciate more of who you truly are.

I understand clients have challenges that they would like support with navigating through. They need a counsellor who is non-judgmental, compassionate, and safe. Typically, client's goals revolve around achieving more self-awareness, skills, and abilities to help themselves live a meaningful life. I want to facilitate their passion about growth and creating lifestyles that support their values and goals. I support neurodiverse clients through affirming care, utilize strengths to help with growing edges, and understand that many underlying challenges are the result of societal expectations.

Sometimes we all feel stuck. Our go-to methods of coping aren't working anymore, or we aren't getting what we need from those we usually turn to. Sometimes we need a space to be heard and other times we want someone to help us set some goals and take those first steps. In working with youth, individuals and families I bring curiosity, gentleness, humour and compassion along with knowledge of many therapeutic modalities which allows me to be flexible and tailor our work together to your specific needs.

Behavioural Issues Counsellors

What happens in therapy for behavioural issues?

No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behaviour issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.

What therapy types help with behavioural issues?

Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioural therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.

How long does therapy last for behavioural issues?

Among popular approaches to treating behavioural concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behaviour management, often used when the underlying cause of behaviour issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioural issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.

How effective is therapy for behaviour issues?

Studies show that therapy for behaviour issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behaviour later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behaviour. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
