If you’re the kind of person who overthinks everything, feels pressure to keep it together, and rarely talks about your own struggles, therapy can be a place to finally exhale.
I work with people who feel stuck between expectations, relationships, and their own inner pressure, helping them slow down, understand their patterns, and move toward a life that feels more meaningful and aligned.

Do you feel like you question yourself all the time, think of yourself as a failure, or not trust your relationships? I help individuals and couples to overcome cycles of doubt through a focused, non-judgmental approach to therapy. Self-doubt can cause us to lose trust ourselves, damage our relationships and careers, cause or worsen anxiety and depression, and can bring us to a place of shame. It can lead us to stagnation or being controlled by our fears. If you are looking to change how you feel about yourself or in your relationship, our work together can be the first step in that process.

I've been a client in therapy myself, and I know some of these feelings.

You found me! I am the real, authentic, engaged counsellor with a mastery of craft, and the warm, kind, honest human presence you need to feel fully held and met.
My clinical interest has always been drawn to the areas of humanness I believe are most lonely (often due to a neglect or fear in our culture of openly addressing them) and those areas are inhabited by people of all presentations and backgrounds. I’m honoured to witness and know them. In terms of how we work, it’s flexible and an ongoing aspect of what we discuss while you’re here. You shine the light on what we discuss and together we map your self-attuned way forward.

My name is Benno Dreger, director of Pacific Family Life Counselling. These days it seems as though life has never been more stressful or complicated. Mental health often takes a back seat to what seem like more pressing matters. People find themselves barely coping with life and trying to just get through one more day. If that sounds like you, then I can help.

At times feelings, or life circumstances become so intense or painful, we become desperate to find ways to fix, avoid, or control them. We may get stuck in worry and self-doubt, avoid meaningful activities, feel unable to let go of control, withdraw from relationships, shut down feelings, ruminate on past hurts, escape into TV, the internet, video games, drugs or alcohol, or get pulled into compulsive or impulsive behaviours. What was meant to fix the problem, ends up making it worse. As life becomes about controlling feelings, it becomes less about what is really important to us - our values and passions.

Have you ever wondered: How much of my problem is me generated and how much is other people or circumstances? You know you are responsible for making changes in your life and yet things happen that make that change seemingly impossible. How can I change my private self and how I relate outwardly? Can I move from victim to survivor, from bully to challenger from rescuer to supporter even when the world and those around me don't cooperate? It's a question worth exploring. Spoiler Alert! It's very possible!

Men's Issues Counsellors
Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.
How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.
What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
