As a fellow
gay
man, I know that there are unique challenges that can come with being a
gay
guy.
Are you a
gay
man who feels anxious, stressed and overwhelmed? Do you feel like life is passing you by while you silently suffer alone? Anxiety can feel so incredibly overwhelming. You may feel sick to your stomach or have trouble sleeping. You’re looking for relief to finally feel “you” again. The good news is that there are specific skills you can learn to not only manage the anxiety, but truly thrive. I know reaching out for support can be really difficult when you don’t know what to expect. I provide a warm, non-judgemental and shame-free counselling environment so that you feel safe and supported.

I believe
gay
men have inherent worth, and that we deserve fulfilling lives.
Are you a
gay
man who is overwhelmed by the intensity of your feelings? Do certain situations feel triggering or remind you of a past trauma? It can feel unbearable when you’re just trying to keep it together, and hoping nobody notices when you start breathing rapidly, sweating, or shaking. Even between intense moments, there can be a low-level anxiety that feels like it’s always lurking, ready to take over at any time. Not to mention the shame about not feeling in control of your responses. The good news is that there are specific skills that can be learned to listen to your emotions and think about your past in a whole new way.

As a
queer
/fluid therapist, I often work with those who are LGBTQ2IA+ as well as artists/writers/creatives.
I practice individual and group psychodynamic psychotherapy, integrating mindfulness and somatic therapy. You may be suffering from anxiety, depression, intense emotions, high levels of shame, are struggling in your relationships, or have other symptoms that have left you feeling disconnected from yourself and others. Many of those I work with also have histories of growing up in invalidating or otherwise harmful environments in which they were not heard. In therapy, it is often the relationship that heals. I'm here to listen and help you move towards feeling more grounded, creative, and engaged in life.

My practice is informed by somatic, narrative, and relational perspectives, as well as by feminist and
queer
theories and emerging understandings of neurodiversity.
I approach therapy as a creative and collaborative process that involves the whole being of both the therapist and client. In order to lead fulfilling, joyful lives, humans need access to the intelligence available through their physical, psychological, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual selves. Trauma, shame, and fear can disrupt our ability to access and experience these aspects of self fully, and can leave us feeling dissatisfied with our lives. By working directly with clients' felt sense of their bodies, as well as their stories and their feelings, I support clients in deepening their relationship to all aspects of themselves.

I have a love for all that is unconventional and I have been working with clients who are
LGBT
,
queer
, non-binary, kinky (BDSM), polyamorous, swingers, sex workers and psychedelic explorers for more than 10 years.
I launched Nested Heart Counselling in 2013 in response to a call from the local polyamorous community saying how challenging it was to find mental health support that didn’t require further education about unconventional identities. I'm not currently accepting new clients personally, however I have collected a group of counsellors with similar values, experience and training as myself across BC. Roxanna, Morgan, Erica all have availability right now for new individual clients. Katree is our practicum student who has reduced cost counselling sessions available in Victoria. You can explore their extensive bios on our website.

As a
queer
and neurodivergent counsellor, I understand how difficult it can be to live in a world that was not built for you. The expectations of the society we live in may have left you doubting your own pain and wondering why you are struggling so much. You may question who you truly are under the mask you are presenting to the world. Perhaps you just want to talk to a counsellor who understands, without needing to educate them about your identity or worry about being invalidated. In our sessions together, we'll create a safe and non-judgmental space where you can be seen as you are and share your story at your own pace.

I earned my Masters degree in clinical psychology in California where I received specialized training in addiction, trauma, anxiety, and the unique struggles of people in the
LGBTQIA
+ community.
I am an RCC specializing in treating addiction, trauma, mood disorders, and interpersonal issues. My approach is rooted in the belief that a greater awareness of where our actions and reactions come from can give us the power to change. I work with my clients to understand how their attachment styles and life experiences have informed how they relate to others and to themselves. With this knowledge we work together to address unwanted behaviours and implement new coping skills for emotional regulation and communication.

As a proudly
queer
, non-binary and neurodiverse person, I know how important it is to be seen as whole, strong and capable amidst our challenges.
Overwhelm, uncertainty, confusion, conflict, anxiety and despair - if this is your reality right now, you're not alone. We're all longing for a sense of connection, possibility, and hope in the face of the tsunami of injustice, trauma and loss we've been living through for so long. Stress levels higher than the price of a Vancouver condo, relationships sinking under the weight of isolation, & identities under attack from all sides - how do we cope with the chaos and still show up as the caregivers, creatives, healers and changemakers the world so desperately needs?

Online appointments available. My clients are introverts and highly sensitive souls that feel overwhelmed because the world is too fast, too noisy, too chaotic but worst of all filled with people lacking compassion. They usually struggle with non-reciprocal relationships and setting boundaries. It's not uncommon for my clients to be astonished at how someone has treated them or the general state of the world. They are filled with feelings of anxiety and worry about the fact that they can't keep up with everyone else. If you are reading this, I commend you on taking this first step. I work with women & members of the
LGBTQ
+ family.

How can I find a therapist in Victoria?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
How much does therapy cost?
Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $300 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
