Children and Parents need counselling to protect them during this stressfull family changes.
Psychotherapy is the confidential process where you can get insight from an experienced registered Psychologist in understanding how life-stressors can interfere with your thinking patterns, feelings, beliefs, needs, behaviour and relationships. Prolonged exposure to stress, unhappiness, conflict, trauma, abuse or problematic relationships can lead to anxiety, depression, grief, anger or other behavioural problems. Brain research clearly indicated that early psychological intervention can prevent mental and physical illnesses. Clients now have the opportunity to be proactive and learn the skills on how to protect their mental health, restore their competence and happiness and develop a strong sense of well-being and resiliency.

Relationships are at the heart of being human; while they are often a meaningful source of joy and connection, they can also make our lives feel uncertain, chaotic, and complicated at times. For nearly 10 years, I have supported individuals facing anxiousness and low mood, stress and burnout, life transitions, relationship challenges, and navigating difficult family dynamics. I help folks uncover a sense of clarity - to better understand their hopes, needs, and wishes in relation to themselves and others - with care, compassion, and curiosity.

Your current circumstances don't dictate where you'll end up. They serve as a starting point for change. We all have the potential to move forward, sometimes having support is the key to getting there. My counselling approach is collaborative and straightforward with a touch of humour. Using a blend of your personal experiences and life context with evidence-based practices such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and family systems we pinpoint your strengths and build positive coping skills to help you reach your goals.

And the lens through which I approach our work together is informed by attachment science, family systems theory, mindfulness, Emotionally Focused therapy (EFT), and is both somatically and transpersonally based.
We all deserve peace, to feel connection with others, and to feel a sense of trust in ourselves and the world. Stress, anxiety, relationship struggles, depression, trauma, major life changes and family issues are among the challenges that can get in the way of us experiencing life the way we would like to. And we all have ways of coping with those stresses. But what happens when those strategies don’t seem to be working anymore? I bring a compassionate and patient approach to our work together. My approach is rooted in my sincere belief, in our ability to heal. No matter the struggle, there is always hope.

With over 35 years of experience working with people, I have a deep appreciation of our human needs. These arise naturally as we each strive to become our differentiated authentic self while also forming meaningful, satisfying relationships with others. Whether you are coming to therapy as an individual, with your partner as a couple, or with family member(s), my primary intention is to attune to the perspectives, feelings, and needs you bring to the situation. I am process-oriented in my approach, and have found that creating a space to listen more deeply to oneself and each other creates new possibilities for growth.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
