In my practice, I work with adults struggling with various issues from anxiety, depression and eating issues, to trauma, grief and relationship difficulties. We all have our own history of experiences, and we tend to react in specific ways under stress. While our response was likely our best option in the past, it may not be adaptive now. I can help you resolve past traumas, learn to accept what is, and move forward from there - developing ways to a fuller and more satisfying life.

We are human and challenges arise for each of us. Counselling can be a means of support a way to heal from past experiences and to plan for the future. There are many reasons people access counselling. The most common reasons are: depression or anxiety, relationship issues, social isolation, body issues, motivation, parenting, substance use, a traumatic experience, academic challenges, an inability to identify feeling, and needing to talk to an impartial person. The list is quite diverse and these are only the most common reasons. I am here to work alongside you and draw from my professional experiences and training to bring more balance, joy, and health into your life. I am trained to work with children, youth, adults, older adults, families, and couples.

We all know that we are conditioned by experiences, burdened by too much programming and sometimes, a bit lost or out of rapport with our very selves. As a result, we can feel stuck, overwhelmed, anxious, depressed or just numb. I am a Registered Clinic Counselor with over 20 years in the counselling field. In my work, I see myself as a respectful, non-blaming collaborator in your search to make sense of what is happening, or in making new sense of what has happened. Though somewhat eclectic in my approach, I rely heavily on Narrative Therapy. As such, I tend to be curious, ask questions and take notes.

But what often first appears as nothing more than a mud bay of depression or a lone rock of despair, often turns out to be the beginnings of a whole new continent.
No matter how the therapy unfolds, I strive to be present, caring, and real. Not a blank-faced professional jotting down notes, but a genuine human being. Each of us is an individual, and therapy requires meeting people in their difficulties, empathizing with their suffering, and forgoing all "off the shelf" techniques. In each case I work with clients to uncover their most difficult and persistent problems in order for them to be processed and worked through. In so doing, I also help clients to discover and integrate more of their largest selves and deepest callings.

Providing a felt sense of ease and presence, attuned listening and a container for deep work are my offerings to you. The symptoms we experience (like anxiety and depression ) are often due to unresolved traumatic stress in the body. By slowly and gently tracking sensation, movement impulses and images we learn to listen to what our body is telling us, and we return to who we truly are. We begin by exploring what is and is not working in your daily life and relationships, and what you are noticing in your body, thoughts, and feelings.

Ever think to yourself "how did I get here?" You feel dread before the day has even begun. On the outside you look like you have it together but on the inside you're a total mess. Stressed out, riddled with anxiety, full of anger or right out depressed . Your emotional walls are so high even you can't see over them anymore. Your mind and body feel completely disconnected. No matter what you do or how you do it, it's never feels good enough. All you want is to get it together and find some inner peace.

We all deserve peace, to feel connection with others, and to feel a sense of trust in ourselves and the world. Stress, anxiety, relationship struggles, depression , trauma, major life changes and family issues are among the challenges that can get in the way of us experiencing life the way we would like to. And we all have ways of coping with those stresses. But what happens when those strategies don’t seem to be working anymore? I bring a compassionate and patient approach to our work together. My approach is rooted in my sincere belief, in our ability to heal. No matter the struggle, there is always hope.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
